Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Run of Success by Road Team Continues in Men’s Basketball Loss to Boston U.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Boston University (16-11, 10-4) controlled the glass and shot over 50 percent from the field in each half to post a 77-54 victory over the Navy (13-12, 7-7) men's basketball team, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.

The road team has now won 10-straight games in the Navy-Boston series.

"We knew this was going to be a very tough game today," said Navy head coach Ed DeChellis, "with our beating them on their home court (60-58 in overtime) and their needing to get a split (of the season series).  They are trying to get a good seed (in the league tournament).  We knew this would be challenging.  We picked a bad night to play, in my opinion, the worst game we played this year."

Navy entered the game leading the Patriot League and ranked 42nd nationally in rebounding margin at +5.0 caroms a game, but were outrebounded –– for only the third time all season –– today, 38-24.  Boston held an 11-10 edge on Navy in offensive boards on the afternoon, but the Terriers scored 20 second-chance points and limited the Mids to just five such points.

Each of Boston's first eight points of the game came after the Terriers grabbed offensive rebounds.  The visitors, who have now posted a 7-0 record at Navy while the Mids have won the last five games in the series that have been played at Boston, jumped out to leads of 10-4, 15-8, and 21-12.  The Terriers soon went on a 9-0 run to take a 30-14 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the first half.  The margin would grow to 38-19 at intermission.

Doing most of the damage for Boston in the first half was 6-8 senior post player Max Mahoney.  With Navy center Evan Wieck (Sr., Amarillo, Texas) limited to just six minutes of playing time in the entire game due to illness, Mahoney registered 15 points on 5-7 shooting from the field and a 5-6 effort from the foul line in the first half.  He also added seven boards and three assists in 12 minutes of playing time in the stanza.

Boston as a team held a 22-10 advantage on the glass in the first half.  The Terriers snared just five offensive boards in the frame as they were 15-26 (57.7%) from the floor, but totaled 11 second-chance points.  Navy was 8-29 (27.6%) from the field and did not tally a second-chance point following any of its four offensive rebounds.

The Terriers continued their hot shooting effort in the second half, this time with guard Javante McCoy pacing the team.  He was 6-8 from the field in scoring 12 points after halftime.  Boston collectively shot 55.2 percent (16-29) from the floor in the final 20 minutes of the game to better the 50-percent (12-24) effort by the Mids.

"We didn't shoot the ball (well), we didn't rebound the ball and we certainly didn't defend," said DeChellis.  "That's who we are, usually.  We defend pretty well and we rebound the ball, and we didn't do those two things."

The lone Mid to score in double figures was Richard Njoku (So., Washington, D.C.), who was 4-4 from the field in scoring a career-best 12 points.

Navy will close the regular season by playing three of its final four games on the road.  That stretch begins with a Wednesday night game at American.
