Long Ball and Clutch Pitching Helps Navy Beat Georgetown, 6-3

Navy rallied to win the series against Georgetown, 2-1

THOMASVILLE, N.C. – Navy (2-1) generated five of its six runs on Sunday via the long ball, which was sparked by Jacob Williamson's (Sr., Sims, N.C.) grand slam in the sixth inning as the Midshipmen beat Georgetown (1-2), 6-3, to win the series two games to one at Finch Field.

Williamson finished the day going 2-for-4 with four RBIs while also scoring twice. Zach Biggers (Sr., Walhalla, S.C.) belted his first home run of the season for Navy's final run of the game in the seventh inning. Colin Jones (So., Collierville, Tenn.) worked a perfect two innings out of the bullpen and struck out three-straight batters in the eighth inning to strand two runners on base in a 6-3 game.

"That is one of the things we talked about in our postgame meeting, not getting off to a great start on Friday, but regrouping and going out and playing pretty good baseball the second two days," head coach Paul Kostacopoulos mentioned about his team rallying to win the series.

"Tommy's start was good because he was able to make big pitches when he had to. He was not sharp as far as balls and strikes go, but when he had to make pitches he made pitches and that gave him a good outing. Dalton Baker did a good job and Colin Jones did a great job. It was his [Jones] second time out this weekend and he did a fantastic job in a pressure situation," Kostacopoulos concluded about the pitching on Sunday.

The Hoyas looked to take the early lead in the first inning after drawing two walks and getting both runners into scoring position. With runners on second and third base, Tommy Goodridge (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) recorded a strikeout and a pop out to get out of the jam.

For the second-straight game, the Midshipmen got on the board first after taking advantage of Georgetown miscues in the top of the third inning. Williamson registered his first hit of the day with a single to left field and he advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Stephen Thompson (Jr., Rock Hill, S.C.) grounded a ball to third base and the Hoyas' second wild throw of the inning resulted in Williamson coming into score and Thompson moving up to second base. The Midshipmen were unable to add to their lead after leaving runners on second and third base.

Georgetown continued to use the home run ball for the bulk of its offense as AJ Lotsis hit his third homer of the weekend with a solo shot with two outs in the fifth inning. Right after the Hoyas knotted the game at one, Williamson answered back in the next half-inning with a grand slam to give Navy the 5-1 lead.

Biggers added on an insurance run for Navy in the top of the seventh inning as he belted a solo home run over the wall in right-center field to push the Midshipmen's lead to 6-1.

The Hoyas did not go away quietly as they loaded the bases to start the eighth inning and then Freddy Achecar III singled to centerfield allowing two runs to score as Georgetown pulled within three runs. Jones came into the game with two runners on base and no one out and he came in with three-straight strikeouts to keep Navy's lead at three.

In the ninth inning, Jones worked a perfect frame to seal the 6-3 win for the Midshipmen en route to winning the series after taking the final two games of the weekend.

Goodridge (1-0) picked up the win after throwing five innings allowing one run on two hits. In the start, Goodridge walked five and struck out four batters. In his second collegiate outing, Jones (1) notched his first career save after two perfect innings with four strikeouts.

Georgetown's Chase Walter (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on two hits in a third of an inning.

Navy now opens its 2020 home slate on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. against Coppin State at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.
