Biggers’ Walk-Off Single Seals Navy’s Three-Game Sweep over Air Force

Zach Biggers finished the day going 4-for-6 for the Midshipmen

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Zach Biggers (Sr., Walhalla, S.C.) delivered a one-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning to drive in the game-winning run for Navy (6-1) as the Midshipmen walked off Air Force (1-6), 4-3, to complete the three-game sweep over their service academy rivals at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.

Biggers finished 4-for-6 at the plate with the one RBI and Zach Stevens (So., Lexington, Mass.) finished 2-for-4 and scored Navy's first three runs on the day, which started with a solo home run. The three-game sweep for the Midshipmen marked the first time in series history that Navy has swept Air Force in a three-game set.

"We are one out away from winning the game but they got a run and for us to come back and get the win showed our resiliency today," head coach Paul Kostacopoulos said. "It was a frustrating day as we had a lot of opportunities and I thought we hit the ball hard, but they were right at them and Air Force turned a couple of big double plays. But sometimes that is just baseball and we were fortunate today to come out on top.

"Zach Biggers had a really good day today for us and he was all around our offense. Tommy Goodridge gave us a good start and once again we had good efforts out of our bullpen, they all did their job. Now we have to move on to the next game."

Following a scoreless opening stanza, Air Force got its first three runners on base in the second inning and took a 1-0 lead after a Clay Randall RBI double. The Falcons then doubled their lead following an error after a passed ball to grab a 2-0 lead at the end of their second at-bat. The two-run lead for Air Force did not last long as Stevens turned on a 1-0 pitch to start the bottom of the second inning and put it over the wall in left field to cut the Midshipmen's deficit in half.

Air Force had runners on base in each of the first four innings but could only score the two runs early on as the Falcons left six runners on through four innings.

Navy tied the game in the sixth inning with Alex Smith (Fr., Laguna Hills, Calif.) sending a single out to centerfield scoring Stevens from second base to make it a 2-2 ballgame.

The Midshipmen tried to take the lead in the seventh inning after loading the bases with one out in the frame, but Air Force escaped the jam with an inning-ending double. Navy found itself in a similar spot in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and two outs. Joe Simourian (So., Andover, Mass.) worked a bases-loaded walk to drive in Stevens to put the Midshipmen ahead by a run. Navy grabbed a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning without recording a hit.

Heading into the ninth inning, the Falcons worked a little two-out magic of their own as Braydon Altorfer singled to right field to drive in the tying run. Trey Braithwaite (Jr., Winchester, Va.) allowed just the one run to keep the game tied going into the bottom of the inning. In the home half of the ninth, the Midshipmen stranded two runners on base as the game went into extra innings.

Dalton Baker (So., Sebring, Fla) worked around a two-out single to retire the side and keep the game tied at three moving into Navy's at-bat. Jacob Williamson (Sr., Sims, N.C.) led off the 10th with a walk and then following a pitching change, Air Force got the first out of the inning. Simourian moved Williamson into scoring position after being hit by a pitch. Already with three hits on the day, Biggers took a called strike one to start his at-bat in the 10th but after seeing the first pitch from Josh Leaser, Biggers hit a hard fly ball over the centerfielder's head driving in Williamson and giving Navy a 4-3 walk-off win over Air Force.

After picking up a save on Saturday, Baker (1-0) grabbed his first win of the season after pitching a scoreless 10th inning. In the start, Tommy Goodridge (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) pitched 5-2/3 innings allowing two runs – one earned – on six hits and two walks but he finished with seven strikeouts in the no-decision. The Midshipmen's pitching staff racked up 10 strikeouts on Sunday and finished the weekend with 31 punch outs.

Ashton Easley (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up one run in one inning of work.

Navy is back on the road during the midweek as it travels to Delaware State on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. contest in Dover, Del.
