HAMILTON, N.Y. –– Colgate (19-6, 10-2 Patriot League) used an 18-2 run midway through the second half to register the 18
th and final lead change of a 67-60 victory by the Raiders over the Navy (12-11, 6-6) men's basketball team, Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, N.Y.
The first-place Raiders opened the game on a 9-2 run, but the Mids scored the next 10 points to gain their first lead of the contest. Navy soon took a 17-13 lead, but from there neither team would lead by more than two points over the remainder of the first half that ended with Colgate in front, 30-28.
"We had our chances," said Navy head coach
Ed DeChellis. "I think our guys played really, really hard today. They competed. I thought we played pretty good in the first half with being down two points."
Colgate had another fast start to the second half as it opened up a 36-28 lead 90 seconds into the stanza. Navy answered with a spurt of its own and took a 38-37 lead on a basket by
Evan Wieck (Sr., Amarillo, Texas). The lead was exchanged three more times, then a fourth time when
John Carter Jr. (So., Spring Hill, Tenn.) made a three-point field goal to make the score 43-41 in favor of the Mids. A couple of possessions later, Carter made a jumper to give Navy a 45-41 advantage with just under 12 minutes left on the clock.
That would be the last made field goal by the Mids until
Greg Summers (So., Ocoee, Fla.) connected on a jumper that drew Navy to within 59-49 with three minutes remaining.
"We were up 45-41 and then they went on a 12-0 run and we just couldn't score," said DeChellis. "We weren't getting very good shots and couldn't score. They had a couple of offensive rebound kickouts for threes which they did the first game as well, and that was the difference in the game."
The Mids kept trying to fight their way back into the game and soon they did just that when
Cam Davis (Jr., Battlefield, Mo.) made a jumper to pull them to within four points at 60-56 with 1:18 still to play. That would be as close as Navy would get as Colgate connected on enough free throws to thwart the rally by the Mids.
"They went to their senior, Rapolas Ivanauskas, down in the low block," said DeChellis. "We had a hard time guarding him. Because they have so many guys on the perimeter who can shoot, you can't give too much help off of those guys. You like to give them twos instead of threes."
Colgate shot 52.2 percent (12-23) from the field in the second half, which was in contrast to the 36.4 percent (12-33) effort by Navy. The Raiders also were 9-19 from the foul line after intermission while the Mids were 5-11 from the charity stripe in the second half.
Navy ended the game with advantages over Colgate in rebounds (41-39), points in the paint (26-22), second chance points (18-7) and bench points (18-3). Each team recorded 13 turnovers, with the Raiders holding an 18-15 edge in points after them.
Summers led Navy with 15 points, Carter and Davis each scored nine points and Wieck recorded eight points and 10 rebounds.
Navy will return home for a game of games next week in Alumni Hall Wednesday against Bucknell and Saturday against Boston U.
