ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy (15-2) continued its winning ways and won its 10th-straight match in a 4-0 contest against Temple (6-5) on Saturday morning at the Tose Family Tennis Center. Along with winning 10 in a row, Navy has earned its 15th win of the season as the Midshipmen are off their second-best start in program history. In 2012, Navy was 16-1 over its first 17 matches.
Saturday's affair also capped off the Midshipmen's stretch with 16 of their first 17 matches at home. To start the season, Navy has posted a record of 14-2 in Annapolis.
"Today's match was a good way to start off the break," head coach
Keith Puryear said. "We knew Temple's team would bring some inherent challenges and we knew we needed to be focused and ready. Aimee and Annalise got us off to a great start at No. 2 doubles. Amanda and Miranda then got a break of serve early and then rode it to get us the decider for the doubles point. In singles, I thought we started well using the momentum gained from the doubles point to get up early on each court. Annalise played a very solid match at No. 1 to finish first and she was followed by Meghana and Jillian, with Kacey at double match point when the match was called. We must now look to focus on our match tomorrow and prepare for outdoor play all week."
The Midshipmen got off to a strong start in doubles and the pair of
Aimee Dervishian (Sr., Milton, Ga.) and
Annalise Klopfer (So., Palm Harbor, Fla.) rolled to a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles against Ruoyu Chen and Rine Nozaki. The win for Dervishian and Klopfer pushed their team-best doubles wins total to seven in dual matches. Playing to the clinching point in the match, Navy captured the doubles points at No. 3 with
Amanda Cyr (Jr., Cary, N.C.) and
Miranda Deng (Jr., North Potomac, Md.) winning a 6-2 contest over Oyku Boz and Yining Tian.
In the final doubles match that went unfinished,
Katreina Corpuz (So., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and
Meghana Komarraju (So., Vienna, Va.) were trailing Oleksandra Doroshenko and Stefaniya Surikova, 4-2.
With the 1-0 lead at the start of singles competition, Navy needed just three points to secure the win. Klopfer continued strong play at No. 1 singles and won her 11th-straight match and is now 10-0 this spring. The sophomore notched a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Surikova to give Navy the two-point lead.
After trailing in her doubles match, Komarraju bounced back with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over Doroshenko as Navy took a 3-0 advantage. The clinching point for the Midshipmen came at No. 3 singles with
Jillian Taggart (Fr., Fair Oaks, Calif.) upending Nozaki, 6-2, 6-4, to clinch the 4-0 win for Navy.
In the final three matches that went unfinished,
Kacey Moore (So., Wellington, Fla.) was a game away from beating Boz at No. 2 singles as she led 6-4, 5-2. At No. 4,
Samantha Choi (Fr., Warrenville, Ill.) won the first set 7-5 but was trailing in the second, 2-1, against Chen.
Casey Accola (Fr., Winter Garden, Fla.) was ahead of Tian at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 3-2, at the time Navy secured the win.
The Midshipmen now head to Florida for their Spring Break trip as they take on Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Orlando, Fla., to start their four-match trip.
