Sunday Salute: Men's Golf

With the unforeseen conclusion to the 2019-20 competition season for all collegiate teams, the Naval Academy Athletic Association is recognizing and honoring the student-athletes and seniors from Navy who had their seasons cut short with a series of "Sunday Salutes." The next program to be recognized is Navy Men's Golf.

Navy's 13-player roster was led in 2019-20 by its lone senior, Asheville, N.C. native Thomas Garbee. A four-year letter winner for the Mids, Garbee was an active member among Navy's lineup his entire career, finishing his four seasons with a 76.00 stroke average that covered 72 rounds and 28 tournament appearances (7 Fr // 8 So // 7 Jr // 6 Sr). He recorded eight top-20 finishes and three top-10 marks, including winning individual medalist honors earlier this season at The Doc Gimmler with a 4-under par 206.

Garbee represented Navy at three Patriot League Championships, including helping lead the Mids to the 2018 Patriot League title, the program's seventh and his first. Additionally, he appeared in the 2018 NCAA Regional at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., where he shot a 33-over par 249 as the Mids placed 13th. As a freshman in 2016-17, Garbee paired with Connor Tallman to defeat Army's Peter Kim and Nick Turner, 2&1, to help guide the Mids to victory (6-5) in the annual Star Match.

This season, Garbee played in a team-high six tournaments and owned a career-low 73.69 average. While sharing individual medalist honors with teammate Charlie Musto, Garbee helped Navy capture The Doc Gimmler team title with a school-record 6-under par 834. The Mids shot a then program-low 3-under par 277 to open the tournament before breaking that mark in the final round with a 6-under par 274. The previous school record for a single round was a 278 set at the 2018 Doc Gimmler. Navy closed out the shortened season with a 12th-place finish at the Invitational at Savannah Harbor by shooting a school-record (in relationship to par) 7-under par 281 in the final round. It was the lowest round of the tournament by any team.
