Naval Academy Athletic Association Announces Major Award Winners

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3UO3Kx8D3I

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—The Naval Academy Athletic Association announced its major athletic award winners this afternoon with Malcolm Perry from the football team taking home both the NAAA Sword for Men and the Thompson Trophy and Kelly Larkin from the women's lacrosse team being named the winner of the Vice Admiral Lawrence Sword for Women. Ronan Williams of the water polo team and Erin Scudder of the women's swimming & diving team were named winners of the Coaches' Calvert Award.

The NAAA Sword for Men is presented to that man of the graduating class who is considered by the Association's Athletic Council to have personally excelled in men's athletics during his years of varsity competition, while the Thompson Trophy is presented to that midshipman, male or female, who has done the most during the year to promote athletics at the Naval Academy.

Perry is just the eighth student-athlete to win both awards since 1920 and the first since Keenan Reynolds in 2016.

Perry finished his career with 4,359 rushing yards, the second most in school history, while his 40 career rushing touchdowns are the fourth most in school history.  He finished with 5,320 all-purpose yards (rushing, receiving, returns), which also ranks second all-time in school history.

As a quarterback, Perry compiled a 15-6 record in his 21 career starts, averaging 154.6 rushing yards per game and rushing for 34 of his 40 career touchdowns.  He rushed for more than 200 yards in six of those starts and for more than 300 yards in one of them (this year against Army). His 21-career 100-yard rushing games rank as the second most in school history, while his six 200-yard rushing games are the most in school history.

Perry had a sensational 2019 season, helping lead Navy to a school-record 11 wins, victories over Air Force and Army to win the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy, a share of the American Athletic Conference West Division title and a win over Kansas State in the Liberty Bowl.  Additionally, Navy's eight-game improvement from the previous year marked the second-biggest turnaround in FBS history.

Perry, who served as one of Navy's four captains, rushed for a school-record and FBS record for a quarterback 2,017 yards and 21 touchdowns while completing 48 of his 86 passes for 1,084 yards and seven touchdowns.  His 181.58 passing efficiency mark was also a Navy record.

Perry's 11 100-yard rushing games were a school record, as were his 10-consecutive 100-yard rushing games.

Perry set a program record for most 200-yard rushing games in a season with three, including his epic Army-Navy game-record 304 yards in the Mids' 31-7 rout of Army.

Perry led the country in explosive runs (runs of 20 yards or more) with 26, while his 21 rushing touchdowns were the most in the FBS this season by a quarterback, third most by any player and the 11th most in FBS history by a quarterback.

Perry was named the American Athletic Conference and ECAC Offensive Player of the Year and was the Liberty Bowl and Army-Navy Game Most Valuable Player.

Navy finished the year ranked 20th in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls.  The No. 20 ranking is the highest final ranking for a Navy team since 2015 when the Mids were ranked 18th and it marks just the second time in the last 56 years that Navy finished the year ranked in the Associated Press Top 20.

Perry was taken in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. He is the third Navy player to be drafted in the last six years and the first since 2016 when Keenan Reynolds was drafted in the sixth round by the Baltimore Ravens.

The Vice Admiral Lawrence Sword for Women is presented to that woman of the graduating class who is considered by the Association's Athletic Council to have personally excelled in women's athletics during her years of varsity competition.

Larkin played and started in all 72 games of her career and was a four-time Inside Lacrosse All-American, while also earning All-America distinction from the IWLCA as a junior. Larkin earned First-Team IWLCA All-South Region honors in back-to-back seasons (2018, '19), while also earning All-ECAC recognition twice (2018, '19). As a freshman, she was selected as the Inside Lacrosse Division I Rookie of the Year.

Larkin was a nominee (one of 25) for the Tewaaraton Award, which is awarded to the top lacrosse player in the country, while being named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List (one of 50) in multiple seasons.

Larkin was a three-time All-Patriot League performer, while earning Patriot League Attacker of the Year in 2019, as well as Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2017. She helped lead Navy to three-consecutive Patriot League Tournament Championship games, winning a pair of titles.

She helped Navy earn consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including the 2017 NCAA Final Four – the first ever appearance by a women's team from a Service Academy in any sport. For her efforts during the Final Four run, Larkin was named to the 2017 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship All-Tournament Team.

Larkin finished her Navy career as the school and Patriot League record holder in points and assists, while ranking fourth in school history in goals scored. She tallied 376 total points on 199 goals and 177 assists. The Alexandria, Va. native ranked first in the Navy record books in assists per game (2.56 per game), while ranking second with 5.22 points per game and 2.76 goals per game.

Nationally, the Tewaaraton Award Nominee was on pace to become the fourth player in NCAA history to score 400 or more points, while also becoming the third player in the NCAA record books with 200 or more assists. When the season was cut short, Larkin was on pace to score 100 points on the year, which would have made her the first player in NCAA history to record four 100-point seasons.

Larkin is the third women's lacrosse player to win the sword and the first since Jenna Collins in 2018.

The Coaches' Calvert Award recognizes a graduating varsity letter winner who displayed leadership, consistent effort, loyalty and dedication to the sport and who has taken their abilities beyond the expectations of the coach, peers and themselves.

Williams was a two-time team captain for the Mids (2018 and 2019), while playing in 81 games as a goalkeeper.  He became the fourth goalie in Navy history to record 600 or more saves, finishing his collegiate career with 609 stops.

Williams finished his career with a .472 save percentage and recorded double-digit saves 25 times.  He helped lead Navy to a third-place finish in the 2019 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Tournament, which was Navy's highest conference tournament finish since 2014.

He is the sixth water polo player to win the award and the first since Eric Gardiner in 2008.

Scudder was a First-Team All-Patriot League selection in 2018, 2019 and 2020 and advanced to the championship final in all nine career individual events at the Patriot League Championship as she helped lead Navy to three team titles in her career.

She won the 2020 Patriot League title in the 1650 free with a winning time of 16:28.26, which ranks as the third-fastest time in school history, and also had two second-place finishes and two third-place showings over the course of her three seasons.

Scudder also helped Navy win four relay event titles at the PL Championship in her three-year career, including the 400 free and 800 free relays in 2020.

She is the sixth swimmer to win the award and the first since Charlotte Meyer in 2017.
