TUSCON, Ariz. – Alex Smith (Fr., Laguna Hills, Calif.) represented Navy on the
Collegiate Baseball 2020 Freshmen All-American Team announced on Tuesday. Smith's recognition this season marks the fifth-straight season that Navy has had a Freshman All-American and he is the 13th different Midshipmen in program history to earn the designation.
Navy's streak of Freshmen All-Americans began in 2016 with
Noah Song earning the honor from the NCBWA and Louisville Slugger. The duo of
Zach Biggers (Sr., Walhalla, S.C.) and
Jacob Williamson (Sr., Sims, N.C.) garnered the award in 2017 with
Jared Leins being selected in 2018. Last season,
Zach Stevens (So., Lexington, Mass.) was named a Freshman All-American.
During the 2020 season, Smith finished with a .368 batting average to lead the Midshipmen with his .526 slugging percentage also pacing the team. He made 12 appearances and 10 starts during his freshman season and notched nine RBIs for Navy. In his 38 at-bats, Smith recorded 14 hits with five going for extra-bases and he also scored seven runs.
Smith recorded a hit in his first six appearances of the season and his breakout performance came in the final game against Massachusetts on March 1 as he went 4-for-5 with five RBIs, a pair of runs scored and two doubles.
Following his breakout game against Massachusetts, the freshman became the first player in Patriot League history to be selected as the Patriot League Player and Rookie of the Week during the same week.
Smith helped Navy finish the shortened 2020 season with a record of 14-1 overall and the Midshipmen won the last 14 games of the regular season for the program's second-longest single-season winning streak in school history.
