Navy Fights Off Bucknell for Three-Set Volleyball Win

LEWISBURG, Pa. –– Jamie Llewellyn (So., Port Deposit, Md.) led Navy in kills, aces and hitting percentage in a 3-0 victory by the Mids (6-7, 2-2 Patriot League) over Bucknell (5-9, 1-4), Friday night at Davis Gym in Lewisburg, Pa.  The Mids trailed for just one point in the 25-15, 25-21, 25-16 decision.

"I'm really proud of this bounce-back match," said Navy head coach Paco Labrador.  "Bucknell plays great defense and our hitters had to constantly find new ways to score."

Navy took a 9-3 lead early in set one.  Bucknell closed to within 12-8 but a 4-0 run by the Mids pushed their lead out to 16-8.

Navy registered 12 kills and a .286 hitting percentage in set one, while holding Bucknell to eight kills and a .074 attack percentage.  The Bison would find their offense in the second set.

The Mids seemingly were on the verge of building some separation between themselves and the Bison several times in the frame, but never were able to do just that.  Navy led by scores of 7-3, 12-7, 16-10 and 20-14.  A pair of sideouts made the score 21-15, then Bucknell ran off the next five points to close to within one point at 21-20.

Avery Stowell (Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) registered a kill, then Llewellyn dropped in a service ace to make the score 23-20 and force a Bucknell timeout to be called.  The Bison notched a kill after the break, then Stowell ended the longest rally of the match with a well-placed kill to take the Mids to set point.  An attack error by Bucknell closed out the frame.

Bucknell led Navy in kills in the second set, 15-12, but the Bison also recorded more attack errors than the Mids, 9-4.

The Bison scored the first point of the third set to take their only lead of the night.  Navy answered with a 7-0 run and soon took a 12-4 lead.  A run by Bucknell drew the home team to within striking distance of the visitors at 13-9.  The Mids promptly scored each of the next two and five of the next seven points to extend the advantage out to 18-11 and provide enough of a cushion to win the set and the match.

Navy tallied 47 kills and a .260 attack percentage on the night to better the 40 kills and .090 attack percentage recorded by Bucknell.  The Bison had nine more attack errors (22-13) despite the Mids finishing with just a 6-5 edge in blocks.  Bucknell also grabbed more digs, 41-37, and had more aces, 4-3, but finished with eight service errors to double Navy's total of four.

Llewellyn recorded 12 kills, a .500 attack percentage and two aces to lead the Navy offense in the victory.  Defensively, Kimberly Lynch (Sr., Murrieta, Calif.) grabbed 13 digs for the Mids.

"Jamie played another incredible match with mixing speeds and angles of her swing," said Labrador.  "Cami Herman (Sr., Brookfield, Wis.) and Avery Stowell played smart and steady volleyball.

"Wins on the road during league play are always huge.  I'm happy we played a smart and physical game tonight."

Navy will remain in the Keystone State overnight and will play Saturday afternoon at Lehigh.
