BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – The Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference announced its weekly awards and Navy's
Merle Richman (La Jolla, Calif.) and
Caden Capobianco (Laguna Beach, Calif.) was selected as Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. It is the first weekly honor for Richman in his career and the second for Capobianco this season.
The duo helped Navy to a pair of MAWPC victories over the weekend, defeating Johns Hopkins (W, 14-10) in Baltimore, while finishing the weekend with a win over Bucknell (W, 11-10) at home.
Richman finished the two games with a team-high seven points on a team-best five goals with a pair of assists. The junior made his first appearance of the season against Johns Hopkins, finishing the game with three points on two goals and an assist. Against Bucknell, Richman tallied four points for his first hat trick of the season (3g) with an assist. His final goal proved to be the game-winning goal against the Bison.
Capobianco led the Navy defense, finishing the weekend with 20 saves, seven steals, and four assists in two games. He opened play on Saturday with seven saves, six steals, and three assists in a win over Johns Hopkins. Capobianco closed the day with 13 saves, a steal, and an assist in a win against Bucknell. For the season, the sophomore has 148 saves, 37 steals, and five assists.
Navy returns to action on Friday, Oct. 22, as the Midshipmen host MAWPC newcomer Mount St. Mary's. The game is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Scott Natatorium.
