Taggart and Tannenbaum Clinch Berth to ITA Super Regional Championship

Jillian Taggart and Emily Tannenbaum each clinched a berth in the ITA Super Regional Singles Championship to highlight the participation of the Navy women’s tennis team at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Jillian Taggart (Jr., Fair Oaks, Calif.) and Emily Tannenbaum (Fr., Commack, N.Y.) each clinched a berth in the ITA Super Regional Singles Championship to highlight the participation of the Navy women's tennis team at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship, hosted at the Brigade Sports Complex over the weekend.

The Midshipmen pairing each tallied three victories en route to clinching a berth at the ITA Super Regional Championship that will be hosted in Charlottesville, Va. by Virginia from October 22-25.

"This week has been a bear for all involved, coaches and players alike," said head coach Keith Puryear. "Hosting the very first ITA Atlantic Regional Championship was an honor and a challenge. The hard work of many, particularly my assistant Ale, training staff led by Sean Nelson as well as head official Larry Wells and his staff helped to make this event successful.

"We are very proud of the ladies' performances and the way they responded to challenges we faced. Our goal has been to show improvement with each week of practice and competition and we continue to do that. Kudos to Jillian and Emily for making it to the super round of regionals. While they were the ones to make it out, we can't ignore the whole team's peformances, all of whom competed well.

"Katreina lost a tough one today, but I know she will use that as a learning tool and bounce back. Having two doubles teams also make the final round was impressive as well. While those two teams fell short, I think the experience gained will serve us well moving forward. Stella Ribaudo had a tough, hard-fought win against a seeded player and another bright spot was Sylvia's play throughout the event. Across the board, I feel everyone competed well and we are looking forward to another good week of practice as we prepare for the Blue & Gold Invitational next weekend."

Taggart began her run to qualifying for a Super Regional bid by defeating Towson's Sissi Axelsson in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) before taking down Georgetown's Morgan Coburn (6-4, 6-1) in the round of 32 to advance to the final 16 in the flight.

In the round of 16, the final round of the regional championship, Taggart would defeat another Hoya, McHaley Ho, in two sets (6-1, 6-1) in her last match of the weekend.

Tannenbaum continued the torrid start to her collegiate career, taking down Coppin State's Christy Turner (6-2, 6-3) in the round of 64 before defeating Morgan State's Asmara Rose in straight sets (6-2, 6-0) to advance to the round of 16.

The freshman punched her ticket to the ITA Super Regional Championship with a victory over Morgan State's Ana Torrente (6-3, 6-2). The pairing of Taggart and Tannenbaum dominated their way to a Super Regional berth as neither of the two dropped a set through the weekend.

Also finding success, but falling short of a Super Regional berth, in singles competition was Katreina Corpuz (Sr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) who advanced all the way to the round of 16 after victories over Delaware's Viva Laas (6-3, 6-2) and her fellow Midshipmen Samantha Johns (So., Simpsonville, S.C.) by a score of 6-3, 6-3 before ultimately falling to Georgetown's Avantika Willy in three sets (6-1, 2-6, 7-5).

Stella Ribaudo (So., Chicago, Ill.) also compiled a pair of victories in the tournament, beginning with a win over George Mason's Ashley Fitz-Patrick (6-0, 6-2) in the round of 128 before taking down Saint Joesph's Amanda Nava in a three-set battle (7-6, 3-6, 7-6). The run for Ribaudo ultimately came to an end in the round of 32 as she was defeated by Duquesne's Ana Benito-Utrilla (2-6, 6-4, 7-6).

Johns also reached the round of 32, defeating Saint Joseph's Stow Weiss in the round of 64 prior to being defeated by Corpuz.

After falling in the first round of singles on Saturday, Sylvia Eklund (Fr., Bellevue, Wash.) recorded two victories in the singles consolation bracket, taking down SJU's Nava in three sets (2-6, 7-5, 10-2) and George Mason's Savanna Crowell (6-2, 6-0).

In doubles competition, Taggart and Tannenbaum were paired together and fell just one win shy of securing a Super Regional berth in doubles competition. The pair took down GMU's Crowell and Jackie Nannery (6-3) prior to securing a win over Georgetown's Olivia Ashton and Avantika Willy (6-1) to advance to the quarterfinal round.

The run ultimately came to an end for the Midshipmen duo, falling in the quarterfinals to George Washington's Kat Marinkovikj and Stella Wiesemann in a hard-fought match, 7-6.

Also participating in doubles competition for the Mids was the pairing of Corpuz and team captain Meghana Komarraju (Sr., Vienna, Va.) who defeated Howard's Yemisi Ifederu and Nadia Pegram (6-0) in the round of 32 followed by a victory over Georgetown's Chloe Bendetti and Morgan Coburn to advance to the quarterfinal round.

The run for the Navy pairing ultimately came to an end in the quarterfinals, falling to Penn State's Sofia Chekhlystova and Gabby O'Gorman, 6-1.
