ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's rowing program will race for the final time in a collegiate competition for the 2021 calendar year on Sunday with action at the Rivanna Romp. Taking on a field filled with some of the top contenders at the NCAA Championship year-in, year-out, the Mids have four boats that will compete in the 4,000-meter head race on the Rivanna Reservoir in Earlysville, Va. All four of Navy's boats are entered in the 12 p.m. varsity eights race.
Scouting the Field (Clemson, Duke, Louisville, Navy, North Carolina, SMU, Virginia)
The field at Sunday's Rivanna Romp includes four teams that finished their 2021 spring competitive season ranked in the top-20 in the final Division I Coaches Poll with the hosts Virginia leading the way at No. 5. SMU is the second highest ranked team set to participate on Sunday as the Mustangs finished the 2021 season 10th in the nation. Duke and Navy round out the talented quartet of top-20 teams as the Blue Devils were ranked 16, while the Mids were No. 20. Additionally, Clemson was listed in the receiving votes section of the poll.
Five of the seven teams at Sunday's Romp are from the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the 2021 ACC Championship in May at Lake Hartwell, Virginia won its 11th straight conference crown holding off Duke at the top of the standings, 99 to 84. Clemson placed fourth at the nine-team ACC Championship with Louisville and North Carolina finishing seventh and ninth, respectively.
At the 2021 NCAA Championships in Sarasota, Virginia, SMU, Duke and Navy all competed in V8, 2V8 and V4 classifications. The Cavaliers were the highest finishing club of the four as they placed sixth in the V8. The Mustangs, Blue Devils and Mids all raced in the C-Final of the V8 with SMU coming in first to rank 13th overall in the nation. Duke and Navy placed fourth and sixth in the C-Final to rank 16th and 18th overall. The Cavaliers also had the best finish in the 2V8 (fifth overall) ahead of the Mustangs (eighth), Blue Devils (13th) and Mids (18th). In the V4 event finals, UVA placed fourth, while Duke moved up and took an 11th place result. Navy bested SMU in the C-Finals as the Mids finished second for a 14th overall placement, one spot better than the Mustangs.
