ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Coming off standout performances in leading their respective programs to Patriot League Cross Country Championships,
Elizabeth Sullivan (Jr., Portsmouth, R.I.) and
Miguel Mathias (Sr., Nekoosa, Wisc.) share the honor of NAAA Athlete of the Week presented by Northrop Grumman.
Building off of a strong regular season, Sullivan and the women's cross country team was hitting on all cylinders on Sunday at the Patriot League Championship at Lehigh University. Running second as a team through the first two checkpoints of the 6k race, Navy's lineup gathered up and overtook Boston University during the second half of the race, placing its five scoring runners in the top-12 all within 14.7 seconds of each other. Led by Sullivan's seventh-place result, the Mids totaled 47 team points versus 52 for the Terriers for the fifth team title in program history and first since 2021. On her way to an All-Patriot League First Team nod, Sullivan posted a time of 21:45.4.
Competing on a 8k circuit on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course at Lehigh University, Mathias and his Midshipmen teammates were a force as they had five runners in the top-11 throughout the race before closing down the competition with six runners in the top-seven in the final standings. Navy's stout pack effort helped the Mids post a team score of 20 points, the second lowest in the history of the Patriot League Championship. Mathias was the top-placing Mids as he crossed the finish line in second with a time of 25:06.4. The senior was strong from start to finish as he checked in fourth at the first mile marker before moving into second by the 3.9-mile point of the race. Led by his efforts, the Navy men are now nine-time Patriot League Champions.
The Navy cross country programs are away from postseason action this weekend with both team's attention focused squarely on the 2021 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships next Friday, Nov. 12.
