Women’s Tennis Completes Play at Inaugural San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic

The Navy women’s tennis team finished play at the inaugural San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic Sunday, completing its 2021 fall tournament schedule. The Midshipmen posted a perfect 6-0 record in doubles play along with going 7-5 in singles competition.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Navy women's tennis team finished play at the inaugural San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic Sunday, hosted by the University of San Diego.

The tournament was a three-day event with a five-team field of San Diego, UC San Diego, San Diego State and San Diego Christian College joining the Midshipmen. Representing Navy was the quartet Katreina Corpuz (Sr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii), Meghana Komarraju (Sr., Vienna, Va.), Kacey Moore (Sr., Wellington, Fla.) and Jillian Taggart (Jr., Fair Oaks, Calif.).

Navy dominated over the three days of play, recording a perfect 6-0 record in doubles matches along with posting a 7-5 mark in singles competition.

"This event was an unbelievable experience," said head coach Keith Puryear. "From the welcome banquet held Thursday evening, the Wounded Warrior Pro-Am, to the beautiful facility we competed on, everything was first rate. This event gave our team a chance to compete against good west-coast competition, while also truly learning what it means to be member of the USNA family and future Navy or Marine Officers. We must thank Ryan Keckley and the University of San Diego coaching staff for hosting the event, the USNA alumni Association, the premiere gold sponsor Mr. Alan Camaisa, wife Megan and family, all the members of the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic staff, Jessie Lankford, Steve Kappes, Richard Evert, former Navy women's tennis player Haley Mansberger and the tournament officials and staff.

"Most of all, we would like to thank Mr. Chas Mulcahy who is the visionary and organizer of this truly special event. Coach Ale and I felt the ladies competed well, going undefeated in doubles was impressive. I feel we learned and grew with each match and each tournament that we competed in throughout the fall. As we move into the offseason, these lessons need to remain etched in our minds and put into practice daily moving forward."

Following an opening-match loss to San Diego State's Alexandria Von Tersch Pohrer (6-2, 6-2), Corpuz bounced back with a pair of victories over San Diego Christian College's Liza Hinrichs (6-1, 6-2) and UC San Diego's Julianna Sabile (6-1, 6-1).

Komarraju dropped her first match of the weekend to San Diego State's Agustina Rimoldi (7-5, 6-2) before bouncing back with a straight-set win over San Diego Christian's Milana Hrudka (6-2, 6-2) prior to defeating UC San Diego's Rachel Wagner in three sets (6-0, 3-6, 6-4) on Sunday.

Taggart fell to San Diego State's Regina Pitts in straight sets (6-0, 6-2) before winning her final two matches over SDCC's Anthea Weiland (6-0, 3-6, 6-4) and UC San Diego's Adriana Tabares (6-3, 6-2).

Rounding out singles competition for the Midshipmen was Moore who dropped her first match of the weekend to San Diego State's Cecile Morin (7-5, 6-1) before earning a straight-set victory over San Diego's Jessi Muljat (6-2, 6-1). The senior finished competition Sunday with a win over UC San Diego's Anna Snissarenko (6-1, 6-1).

In doubles competition, Moore and Taggart began the weekend with a 6-0 win over Hinrichs and Weiland of San Diego Christian prior to defeating UC San Diego's Snissarenko and Tabares, 6-4, and San Diego State's Pitts and Morin, 6-2.

The pairing of Corpuz and Komarraju posted a trio of victories, beginning with a 6-1 win over Muljat and Hrudka followed by taking a decision over the UC San Diego pairing of Sabile and Wagner (6-3). The duo rounded out the weekend with a hard-fought 7-6 victory against the Aztec's Romoldi and Pohrer.
