Eight-Run Seventh Inning Sparks Navy’s Comeback Win over Coppin State, 16-11

Navy runs its winning streak to 16 games

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After trailing by as many as six runs on Wednesday, Navy (2-0) scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to turn the tables on Coppin State (0-2) to pick up a 16-11 come from behind victory at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. Along with the eight-run frame, the Midshipmen also scored a run in each of their last five at-bats.

Navy had four players with multi-hit games and eight different players scored a run. Logan Keller (Fr., Longwood, Fla.) led the way with a 4-for-6 day at the plate while also scoring four runs and driving in three. Colin Smith (So., Wilmington, Del.) finished with three hits to go along with four RBIs. The outfield duo of Joe Simourian (Jr., Andover, Mass.) and Ryan Duffey (Sr., Duxbury, Mass.) each had two hits.

With the victory on Wednesday, Navy has now won their last 16 games going back to 2020, which ranks second in the nation only behind top-ranked Ole Miss – who has won their last 20 games.

"It was a resilient game in being down 8-2 and things were coming hard for us. Coppin State was swinging the bats well and a lot of their hits were not just singles, they were extra-base hits," head coach Paul Kostacopoulos said. "I thought Jack Ferguson played a key role to settle the ballgame down. We then got a little bit from Dalton Baker and Trey Braithwaite as well, but Jack really settled it down and gave us a chance to come back. We also had a couple of breaks and we were able to capitalize on the breaks as well. It was kind of an uphill battle today, but at the same time, we have a lot of work to do, a lot of things that need addressing and we just need more time to do it."

Just like the season opener on Sunday, Coppin State got out front early with a run in the first inning with Conner Walker's RBI double with two outs in the frame. However, unlike Sunday, Navy was unable to bounce back in the first inning and the Midshipmen were held scoreless through the first three innings.

The Eagles expanded on their lead in the third inning with another run and then tacked on three more runs in the fourth to grab a 5-0 lead. Navy got its offense going in the home half of the fourth with Smith driving in a run on a ground-rule double that hopped over the wall in left-center field. Keller scored on Smith's double while Duffey had to stop at third. With two runners on base, Kyle Rausch (So., Middle Island, N.Y.) drew a four-pitch walk and then Simourian drove in a run with a walk of his own as Navy cut its deficit to three runs.

Coppin State drew out its lead to six runs in the fifth inning with three more runs in the frame after it loaded the bases with one out. The back-and-forth game continued with Navy plating two more runs in that inning. The Midshipmen loaded the bases with no outs after a pair of walks and a Keller double. With Brian Furey (Fr., Strathmere, N.J.) at the plate, two Mids scored on a wild pitch to bring Navy back within three runs.

Simourian started out the home half of the sixth inning with his third triple of the season and then after Zach Stevens (Jr., Lexington, Mass.) notched a one-out walk, Keller drove in Simourian on a groundout to the shortstop as Navy continued to chip away at its deficit.

The Midshipmen held Coppin State scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings and then took advantage of the Eagles' miscues in the seventh inning. Coppin State retired two of the first three batters in the inning but with two runners on base, Eduardo Diaz (Fr., Miami, Fla.,) hit a grounder to shortstop and after the ball was bobbled all three runners were safe. With the bases loaded, Stevens hit a pop-up in the infield that was dropped allowing two runs to score and then Keller tied the game at eight with a single out to right field. Navy reloaded the bases in the inning and a walk by Duffey and an RBI single from Smith gave the Midshipmen a 10-8 lead. Furey broke the game open with a bases-clearing double as Navy took a 13-8 lead after seven innings.

Coppin State answered Navy's eight-run inning, but could only generate one run in the eighth inning. The Midshipmen added some insurance runs in the bottom of the inning with Keller's third RBI of the game and Smith drove in two more runs to give Navy a 16-8 advantage.

In the ninth inning, the Eagles tacked on two more runs as they tried to put together a comeback of their own, but the duo of Trey Braithwaite (Sr., Winchester, Va.) and Nolan Jorgenson (Fr., Eastvale, Calif.) limited the damage and secured the 16-11 win for the Midshipmen.

Dalton Baker (Jr., Sebring, Fla.) earned the win on the mound after he tossed 1-1/3 innings allowing two hits and a run. Braithwaite notched a team-high five strikeouts in his 1-1/3 innings of relief as the Navy pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts on Wednesday.

Giovanni Canales (0-1) was tagged with the loss after he gave up six runs – one earned – on three hits. As a team, the Eagles walked a total of 13 hitters.

Navy continues its three-game homestand on Saturday at 1 p.m. against George Mason before hitting the road on Sunday to face the Patriots in Fairfax, Va.
