Navy Football Team Awards Announced

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-The Navy football team awards were announced in a virtual ceremony last Friday.

Junior linebacker Diego Fagot (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) was named the winner of the E.E. "Rip" Miller Award, which is presented to the season's most valuable player as voted on by his teammates.
 
Fagot, who was also voted Second-Team All-American Athletic Conference, led Navy with 72 tackles in nine starts, while also leading the team in tackles for a loss (11) and sacks (3).


Fagot was also the recipient of the Joe Bellino Award, which is presented to the varsity football player whose inspiring on-the-field performance made a significant impact on the team and contributed to its overall success during the season.
 
Senior fullback Nelson Smith (Baton Rouge, La.) was named the winner of the Napoleon McCallum Award, which is presented to the Navy varsity football player of the graduating class who gained the most all-purpose yards in their career. 
 
Smith rushed for 1,644 yards over his four years with 18 touchdowns and four career 100-yard rushing days.  He led the Mids in rushing in 2020 with 645 yards and eight touchdowns in 128 carries and rushed for more than 100 yards on three occasions.
 
Senior defensive end Jackson Perkins (Barrington, Ill.) was named the winner of the Roger Staubach Award, which is presented to the varsity football player who demonstrated consistent, outstanding leadership and an "Expect to Win" attitude in contributing to the team's success during the season and embodied honor, courage and commitment on and off the playing field.
 
Perkins, who was a tri-captain, was the only player on defense to start all 10 games in 2020 and finished with 27 tackles and 3.5 tackles for a loss. He finished his career with 54 tackles, 7.5 tackles for a loss, a sack, an interception, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery.
 
Senior long snapper Kyle Gibbs (Corona, Calif.) was named the winner of the Cmdr. Ralph Sentmann Award, which honors the member of the graduating class from the varsity football team who has achieved the highest ranking in academic order of merit. 
 
Gibbs, who started all 10 games in 2020, carries a 3.86 grade-point average while majoring in ocean engineering.
 
Senior corner and tri-captain Cameron Kinley (Memphis, Tenn.) took home the Jeffrey R. Korn Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given annually to the first classman on the team who has demonstrated excellence both in the classroom and on the football field. 
 
Kinley appeared in all 10 games for the Mids in 2020, starting seven, and finished with 26 tackles and five pass breakups, which were tied for the second most on the team.  Kinley, who played in the Hula Bowl All-Star Game, finished his career with 87 tackles, 3.5 tackles for a loss, one sack, one interception, one forced fumble and 12 pass breakups.
 
Senior wide receiver Chase Parrish (Pavo, Ga.) was named the recipient of the First Lieutenant Ron Winchester Unsung Hero Award, which is presented to an unheralded senior recognized as an overachiever and role model as selected by a vote of his teammates. 
 
Parrish was a four-year member of the team and was widely viewed as one of the most unselfish and hardest workers on the team.
 
Senior slot back Myles Fells (Little Rock, Ark.) was named the winner of the Cooke Award, which is given to the player who has done the most to promote team spirit. 
 
Fells made 12-career starts at Navy. including all 10 games this fall.  He finishes his career with 396 career rushing yards and two touchdowns, 122 career receiving yards and one touchdown and 92 career kickoff return yards.
 
Senior guard Peter Nestrowitz (Township of Washington, N.J.), was awarded the Outstanding Lineman Award, presented annually to a member of the graduating class who, as a football interior lineman, has excelled as a student-athlete and contributed to the overall team leadership and spirit.     
 
Nestrowitz, who started 26 career games at guard including the final 23 games of his career, was named First-Team All-American Athletic Conference by the league's coaches in 2020 and was selected to play in both the Tropical and Hula Bowl All-Star Games.
