Edwards, Thompson Tabbed Indoor Track and Field Team Captains
Navy Director of Track and Field
Jamie Cook announced that seniors
Chelsey Edwards (Schertz, Texas) and Clayton Thompson (Corpus Christi, Texas) will be team captains for the 2020-21 indoor campaign.
Edwards is a nine-time All-Patriot League performer, earning first-team distinction in the 400m dash and 4x400m relay. The rising senior is a back-to-back champion in the 400m dash (2019, '20) as an individual during the indoor season, while taking second in the event during the 2019 outdoor competition. She is a member of the 4x400m relay team that won the 2018, '19 and '20 Patriot League titles during the indoor championship, while claiming the 4x400m relay outdoor title in 2018. Edwards holds the Navy school record in the 400m dash (indoor), while being a member of the Navy record-holding 4x400m (indoor), 4x100m (outdoor), and 4x400m (outdoor) relay teams.
Thompson is a six-time All-Patriot League honoree, while also earning Patriot League Championship Highest Point Scorer (indoor) in 2020 and PL Rookie of the Meet (outdoor) in 2018. The NCAA Regional qualifier (110m hurdles, 400m hurdles) is the only Midshipmen to run a sub 8-second time in the 60m hurdles, posting 10 times under eight seconds in the 60m hurdles in 2020, including a school-record time of 7.92 to claim first place at the Army-Navy Indoor Star Series Meet, helping the Mids claim the indoor Star. Thompson, who holds the school record in the 60m, 110m, and 400m hurdles, won the 60m hurdles and heptathlon at the 2020 Patriot League Indoor Championship, while claiming the 400m hurdles title at the 2018 PL Outdoor Championship.
Former Track and Field Student-Athlete Buffone ('15) Earns NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
Former Navy track and field student-athlete Tom Buffone has earned a 2020 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Buffone, who graduated from the Naval Academy in 2015, is currently enrolled at Old Dominion University and using the scholarship towards completing his Masters of Engineering Management degree. Buffone was originally awarded the same scholarship in 2015, but the window for using it passed due to his military obligations. With assistance from
Christine Copper, chemistry professor and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative, he applied a second time and once again earned the postgraduate scholarship.
Last Time Out (Indoor): Track and Field Sweeps Patriot League Indoor Championship
The Navy men's and women's track and field team swept the 2020 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship, which was held at Lehigh's Rauch Fieldhouse in Bethlehem, Pa. For the men, it was the 11th win in program history and the seventh time in the last eight years that the Midshipmen won the title. On the women's side, it was the fifth indoor title in program history and marked the second consecutive win for the Mids. As a team, the Navy men scored more points in a conference meet (245 pts) than any other Division I school men's team in the country this season. In addition, the Midshipmen scored more points combined between the men's and women's teams (449.5 pts) in the conference meet than any other Division I school in the country this season.
Aside from the overall team wins, Navy claimed some individual major awards. Clayton Thompson (Corpus Christi, Texas) was the Men's Top Point Scorer of the Meet, while Jake Brophy (New Hope, Pa.) was selected as the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet. Freshman Caden Dailey (Centreville, Va.) earned Men's Rookie of the Meet honors, and Director of Navy Track and Field
Jamie Cook was named both the Men's and Women's Coach of the Year.
