GREENSBORO, N.C. –– Navy's
Hannah Montau (Jr., Germantown, Md.) and
Jake Hedrick (Sr., Hummelstown, Pa.) earned victories at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championship, Saturday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
Each of the four Mids who competed this weekend qualified for the NCAA Championship. Montau, Hedrick,
Meghan Gerdes (Sr., Spring, Texas) and
Patrick Carter (Sr., West Islip, N.Y.) will compete at the national championship in a combined 10 events.
"Wow, what a meet," said Navy diving coach
Rich MacDonald. "We had some ups and downs and some stressful moments throughout the week, but it is amazing to end the day with two zone champions."
Montau scored 472.30 points to win Saturday's women's platform competition. Placing second in the 10-dive event was Gerdes with 456.55 points. The results advance both divers to the NCAA Championship in the event. Gerdes also will compete in the three-meter event and Montau will additionally compete in both springboard events.
Hedrick accrued 602.15 points to win the one-meter board Saturday. West Virginia's Paul Lenz placed second with 593.45 points and Carter finished in third place with a 12-dive total score of 547.45 points.
Hedrick will compete at the NCAA Championship in all three events and Carter will compete in the platform and three-meter events.
"We came here today with the goal of sending all four divers to the NCAA Championship (Montau did not qualify on either Thursday or Friday," said MacDonald, "and obviously we accomplished that. I couldn't be prouder of how they competed and stepped up to the pressure of the competition."
Gerdes (2019, '20), Montau (2019, '20) and Hedrick (2019) each previously advanced out of the Zone Championship to the NCAA Championship. Carter will be making his NCAA Championship debut.
"This is great for all four of our divers," said MacDonald. "Meghan and Hannah qualified last year, but then the championship was canceled due to COVID. Jake has advanced to the NCAA Championship for the second time and Patrick will be closing his career by competing at the national championship for the first time. We are excited for each of them."
Greensboro will play host to the women's (March 17-20) and men's (March 24-27) NCAA Championship meets.
