ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The regular season comes to a close this weekend for Navy women's tennis (5-2, 3-1 Patriot League) as the Midshipmen will take on Boston University (6-1, 2-0 Patriot League) in a neutral site match on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in West Point, N.Y. Fans are not permitted to attend Saturday's match.
The Midshipmen come into the weekend after winning two matches last week where they upended Loyola and Bucknell in a pair of 7-0 decisions. Over the two matches, Navy did not drop a match and only dropped one set. With the two wins last week, Navy has now won its last three matches in a row, all coming in Patriot League action.
With the 12 singles wins last week, Navy has pushed its singles mark as a team to 31-11 and the Midshipmen have gone 19-5 in singles contests within the Patriot League.
Katreina Corpuz,
Miranda Deng and
Meghana Komarraju lead the team with five wins each while Corpuz has gone a perfect 4-0 in singles during the Patriot League season. Navy has controlled the No. 6 singles position and has gone 7-0 with
Samantha Johns winning her four appearances at the position along with
Stella Ribaudo going 2-0 and
Casey Accola also earning a win.
At the top of the ladder,
Jillian Taggart – who named Patriot League Women's Tennis Player of the Week – has played six of the seven matches at the No. 1 spot en route to a 3-3 record where
Kacey Moore is 1-0 at the spot and 3-2 at No. 2 singles.
In doubles competition, the Midshipmen are 16-5 overall and 10-2 in the Patriot League. Corpuz and Komarraju have gone 5-1 as a pair, which includes a mark of 4-1 at No. 2 doubles and a 1-0 record at No. 1. The duo of Deng and Taggart are 4-2 this spring with each match coming at the No. 1 spot.
Boston comes into the weekend with a 6-1 record and has won its last five matches. The lone loss for the Terriers came on the road against Boston College, 5-2. Boston is 2-0 in Patriot League matches following a 4-3 win against Army and a 7-0 win at Holy Cross. Lily Burchell and Emily Kim have paced the Terriers this season with the pair each having five singles wins and when paired in doubles the duo is 2-2.
In the all-time series, the Terriers have controlled the series and have won all seven meetings against the Midshipmen. During the last meeting in 2019, Navy suffered a narrow 4-3 setback after the two teams each won three singles matches and Boston edged out the Midshipmen for the doubles point, 2-1.
Following this weekend's action, Navy will host the Patriot League Tournament from Thursday, April 29 through Sunday, May 2 at the Brigade Sports Complex.
