ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy's women's golf trio of
Angelina Chan (So., Franklin, Tenn.),
Mara Hirtle (Fr., Pinehurst, N.C.) and
Stephanie Lee (Fr., Southlake Texas) were named NAAA Athletes of the Week presented by Northrop Grumman after leading the Midshipmen to the program's first Patriot League Championship this past weekend. The women's golf ensemble shares the NAAA Athlete of the Week award with Spencer Rees of the Navy men's lacrosse team and Andrew Ton of the Navy men's tennis team. Rees helped the Midshipmen win their Star Game over Army, 9-4, while Ton paced Navy to the Patriot League Tournament title after beating Army in the championship, 4-2.
The trio finished tied for fourth at the Patriot League Championship over the weekend and each of the three was named to the All-Patriot League First Team. Chan, Hirtle and Lee were all competing in their first league championship and they each notched a three-round score of 14-over par 230 and were just three shots off the lead.
Chan posted Navy's lowest score of the tournament after a final-round score of 1-over par 73 after starting with scores of 4-over par 76 and 9-over par 81. She was the only player in the field to finish under par on the par fives at 2-under par.
Hirtle led the tournament field after the first two rounds following back-to-back rounds of 4-over par 76 and she finished with a 6-over par 78 on Sunday. The freshman ranked second in the tournament field in par-three scoring (2-over par) and third in par-four scoring (7-over par).
Lee rounded out the Midshipmen who finished the league championship tied for fourth. She had Navy's lowest round after day one following a 3-over par 75 to finish out the first day of competition. Lee also carded a 6-over par 78 and a 5-over par 77 while finishing with a tournament-best 34 pars and she was third with six birdies.
As a team, the Midshipmen won the conference title after compiling a total score of 57-over par 921. Navy fired a pair of 20-over par 308s on Saturday followed by a season-best 17-over par 305 during the final round. The Midshipmen had the two team scores over the final two rounds.
Navy – who earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Championship – will learn its regional location on Wednesday afternoon. The Golf Channel will carry the national championship selection show at 2 p.m.
