ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Coppin State (7-24) scored the final four runs on Wednesday afternoon to edge past Navy (13-10) in a 12-10 decision after the Midshipmen jumped out to an early five-run lead at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.
Logan Keller (Fr., Longwood, Fla.) led Navy on offense with a 3-for-5 game and he drove in four of the Midshipmen's 10 runs. All nine of Navy's RBIs came from the top six spots in the batting order.
"We did not compete well on the mound day," head coach
Paul Kostacopoulos said. "We gave up 17 hits, we could not get the third out of innings and kept extending innings. That is why we have continued to give up close to double-digit runs the last five games. Ten runs should be enough to win a ballgame but we are not getting competitive outings by our staff."
The Midshipmen got off to a strong start and they scored the first five runs of the game to take the early lead. In the first inning, Keller drove in two runs with a single through the left side of the infield and then
Alex Smith (So., Laguna Hills, Calif.) drove in Keller with a single back up the middle to give Navy a 3-0 advantage after the opening frame.
After scoring their three runs with two outs in the first inning, the Midshipmen kept the trend going in the second with two more two-out runs.
Colin Smith (So., Wilmington, Del.) started the two-out rally with a triple down the right-field line and after a walk by
Christian Policelli (Jr., Walkersville, Md.),
Colin Smith came into score on a Coppin State error. Navy took a 5-0 lead after two innings of play following an RBI single from Keller to cap off the stanza.
Coppin State erased Navy's advantage in the third inning with five runs on four hits but the Midshipmen capitalized on another error by the Eagles to regain the lead in the fourth inning.
Zach Stevens (Jr., Lexington, Mass.) put the Midshipmen back on top with a sacrifice that scored
Zane Raba (Fr., San Antonio, Texas). Then, with two outs in the inning, Keller continued his strong afternoon with an RBI triple to extend Navy's lead to two runs.
The back-and-forth game continued with Coppin State plating three runs in the fifth inning but Navy answered back with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. During the home half of the fifth inning, Raba was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in a run and then a ground out by
Alex Smith and a sacrifice fly from Policelli put the Midshipmen back ahead, 10-8.
However, the Eagles continue their strong offensive day and scored a run in the sixth inning followed by three runs in the eighth to secure a 12-10 win over the Midshipmen. Coppin State finished with 17 hits on the afternoon.
Matthew Shirah (Fr., Blue Ridge, Ga.) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on three hits and a walk. As a team, Navy posted a season-high 14 strikeouts against the Eagles.
Bradley Tuttle earned the win after tossing three hitless innings and recording six of Coppin State's seven strikeouts.
Navy is back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Lehigh starting at noon in Bethlehem, Pa. The Midshipmen return home on Sunday for Senior Day against the Mountain Hawks at 2 p.m.
