ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy women's golf capped off its two-event week with a third-place finish at its Navy Spring Invitational. The Midshipmen finished with a two-round score of 89-over par 665. Navy shot a 53-over par 341 on Friday and the team carded a 35-over par 324 on Saturday at the Naval Academy Golf Club.
"Saturday was a much better day of golf," head coach
Nadia Ste-Marie said. "I am proud of the way the team battled in some extremely difficult playing conditions. We are now looking forward to having some practice time to get us ready for the Patriot League Championship."
Christine McDonnell (Sr., Suwanee, Ga.) led the Midshipmen with a 17-over par 161 (80-81) to finish tied for third in the 28-golfer field. The senior finished with a tournament-best even-par on the par fives over the two days and she finished tied for fourth in the field with a pair of birdies.
Freshman
Mara Hirtle (Pinehurst, N.C.) finished tied for fifth after compiling at 20-over par 164 (83-81) over the two days. She finished tied for second with three birdies and tied for fifth in the field in par-four scoring after notching a 13-over par on those holes.
Stephanie Lee (Fr., Southlake, Texas) posted Navy's lowest round of the weekend with a 5-over par 72 on Saturday. However, she finished tied for 11th at 25-over par 169 for the tournament. Lee's 77 was the third-lowest round in the entire tournament and her 3-over par on the par threes ranked fourth overall.
Tori Smith (Jr., Arlington, Tenn.) placed 14th overall with a 28-over par 172 with her three birdies tying Hirtle for second.
Eve Worden (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) rounded out Navy's lineup at 37-over par 181 to finish 27th. Competing as individuals,
Jacqueline Cherry (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) finished tied for 19th at 30-over par 174 and
Angelina Chan (So., Franklin, Tenn.) placed 23rd with a two-round total of over 32-over par 176.
Delaware State won the tournament with a 78-over par 654 and Towson's Julia Calomiris won medalist honors following her 9-over par 153 for the weekend.
Navy now heads to Grasonville, Md., next weekend for The Women's Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday hosted by Towson at the Prospect Bay Country Club.
