ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Third-seeded Navy women's tennis (6-3) opened the Patriot League Tournament on Friday afternoon with a 4-0 win over the sixth-seeded Colgate (4-5) inside the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Midshipmen will now face second-seeded Army (12-3) on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Annapolis in the second semifinal of the Patriot League Tournament.
"I really liked the way we came out in doubles. We were very insistent that we do a good job of coming out very quickly. In the conference championship that is extremely important," head coach
Keith Puryear commented. "You take it one match at a time. It is important that you do the little things you need to do in order to be successful and I really liked the way we came out. Then after getting the doubles point, I thought we did a really good job of maintaining that momentum and really pushing and just doing the little things in order to put pressure on our opponents and that was our objective."
The Midshipmen got off to a strong start in doubles competition with a pair of 6-1 victories at the top-two spots. At No. 2 doubles,
Katreina Corpuz (Jr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and
Meghana Komarraju (Jr., Vienna, Va.) grabbed a 6-1 victory over Emily Untermeyer and Rebecca Wolf. Right after Navy took the early lead in the race for the doubles point,
Miranda Deng (Sr., North Potomac, Md.) and
Jillian Taggart (So., Fair Oaks, Calif.) clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles against Emme Levenson and Katerina Atallah.
In the doubles match left on the court at No. 3,
Samantha Johns (Fr., Simpsonville, S.C.) and
Kacey Moore (Jr., Wellington, Fla.) were ahead 5-1 when the Midshipmen secured the doubles point.
After clinching the doubles point for Navy, Taggart kept the momentum going for the Midshipmen at the top-seeded singles position with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Levenson. Then, Navy stayed perfect at No. 6 singles with Johns rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Elinor Simek. The clinching point for the Midshipmen came at No. 5 singles where Corpuz notched a 6-0, 6-1 win against Madi Kiani to secure the 4-0 win for the Midshipmen.
In the final three matches on the court, Moore was at match point at No. 2 singles as she led 6-1, 5-1 when the Midshipmen clinched the match. At No. 3, Komarraju led 6-1, 5-3 and Deng held a 6-1, 5-2 advantage to No. 4 singles when Navy won the contest.
The semifinal matches on Saturday feature No. 1-seeded Boston University facing No. 5-seeded Bucknell at 10 a.m., followed by No. 2 Army against No. 3 Navy at 2 p.m. The championship match is slated for Sunday at noon from Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium.
