Navy Sweeps Morgan State to Leave Baltimore With 3-0 Record at Invite

Baltimore, Md. –– The Navy volleyball team trailed for just one point during a 3-0 victory over Morgan State, Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House in Baltimore.  The Mids improved their record to 3-0 on this the opening weekend of the season with their 25-11, 25-20, 25-21 victory over the 0-4 Bears.

"We had to dig pretty deep today," said Navy head coach Paco Labrador.  "It was a great test of our physical endurance but, more importantly, our ability to stay dialed into the details we pride ourselves on."

Navy quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Morgan State in set one.  The Bears closed to within 6-3 and 10-6, but the Mids scored 10 of the next 11 points to build a cushion and win the opening frame.  Navy hit .333 in the set and held Morgan State to a (-).167 mark.

The Mids never trailed in the second set, but also never had a comfortable lead until late in the frame.  After score was tied at 3-3, Navy held slim leads until a 5-0 spurt gave it a 22-15 advantage.  It would soon be a 23-16 lead before Morgan State closed to within four points at 23-19.  A lengthy point ensued that went Navy's way to take it to set point with a 24-19 lead.  An exchange of sideouts closed out the stanza.

Maggie Bodman (So., Northbrook, Ill.) totaled four kills and no attack errors on six swings in the second set.

Morgan State scored the first point of the third set to take its first lead of the afternoon.  Navy regained the lead at 2-1, then the score was tied at 3-3.  Navy took leads of 6-3, 9-5 and 12-8.  The margin soon grew to 15-10 only to see it dwindle to 16-14.  The Mids would take six-point leads at 21-15 and 22-16.  The Bears ran off the next four points to make the score 22-20.  That run was stopped on a service error by Morgan State, but the Bears responded by siding out to again make it a two-point difference at 23-21.  Back-to-back Navy points ended the set and the match.

"Morgan State had a great serving game plan and we had to make a few adjustments to handle it," said Labrador."

Navy held a .333-.074 advantage in hitting thanks to a 40-26 lead in kills.

Jamie Llewellyn (So., Port Deposit, Md.) registered 10 kills to lead the Navy offense.  Cami Herman (Sr., Brookfield, Wis.) tallied three kills in each of the sets and Bodman totaled eight kills and a .462 hitting percentage.  Bodman hit .500 over the last two sets of play.  Setter Celie Feighery (Jr., Oak Hill, Va.) notched a double-double of 13 assists and 10 digs while fellow setter Averi Miller (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) dished out 17 helpers.

"Celie was really seeing the game well today, both offensively and defensively," said Labrador.  "Lydia Peton (So., Christiansburg, Va.) had some clutch kills when we needed her."

Navy will open the home portion of its season Sunday when the Mids play host to Towson at 2 p.m. in the Wesley A. Brown Field House.  The Tigers, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2019 and 2020-21, went into a Saturday night match against Binghamton with a 2-0 record.
