ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men's tennis team posted a winning record in both singles and doubles this weekend while competing at the Joe Hunt Invitational and the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. The Mids combined for a 22-20 record in singles and a 10-9 record in doubles at the two tournaments.
"It definitely was a learning weekend," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "Hopefully we can build upon some of the positives that the team experienced over the three days of play."
At the Navy-hosted Joe Hunt Invite,
Jack Dabek (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) ended the three-day event with a 3-0 record in singles.
Cy McLeod (Fr., Augusta, Ga.),
Nicholas Nguyen (So., McLean, Va.) and
William Pak (So., Chantilly, Va.) each posted 3-1 marks. Additionally,
Jan Kjellberg (Sr., White Plains, N.Y.) and

Dabek did not drop a set in winning his three matches against opponents from St. Bonaventure (Ethan Nguyen and Jean Massero) and Mary Washington (Priyan Desilva). McLeod won straight-set matches against foes from Fairleigh Dickinson (Andrei Oprisor) and Christopher Newport (Mason Kolls). Nguyen and Pak each won a pair of 10-point tiebreakers (used in place of a complete third set) over the course of the tournament.
Pak and
Christian Pumpelly (Jr., Atlanta, Ga.) combined for a 3-1 record in doubles. The winning scores for the pair were 6-3 against teams from Christopher Newport (Matthew Dubuque and Eddy Hansen) and St. Bonaventure (Marrero and Will Schneideman) and 6-2 versus another team from St. Bonaventure (Luke Riemann and Norka Sanchez). The lone loss for the Pak-Pumpelly duo was a 6-4 defeat to Campell Erwin and Alex Wernick from Richmond.
Three additional Navy tandems –– Dabek and

Sam Vagner (Sr., Staten Island, N.Y.) and
Andres Ballesteros (Jr., West Hartford, Conn.) and
Eric Liu (So., Canton, Mich.) –– posted 2-1 marks.
"Cy finished strong by winning his last three matches," said Garner. "He played some of his best tennis on the biggest points. Andres and Eric had a strong start in doubles. Their games complemented one another well."
