Navy Lacrosse Announces Staff Changes

ANNAPOLIS, Md. —  Navy men's lacrosse head coach Joe Amplo announced today that Blake Miller, a former US Men's Lacrosse National Team member, has joined the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant, replacing Rob Camposa who has transitioned into a video and technology role. Tim Murray has also joined the program as the head men's lacrosse strength and conditioning coach, following the retirement of Kirk Woolfolk, who spent better than 20 years working within the Navy athletics strength and conditioning department, while also serving as a physical education instructor at the Academy.

"I am extremely thankful for the support given to our program in allowing me to put together a world class staff," said Amplo. "Today, I am proud to announce some key additions and shifts in our operation."

Miller arrives in Annapolis after serving as the boys lacrosse offensive coordinator at Manhasset High School since 2012. Under his direction, Manhasset won three Long Island Championships (2015, '19, '21), made New York State Semifinals appearances in 2015 and '19 and punched its ticket to the 2015 New York State Championship Game. Additionally, Manhasset earned appearances in the Nassau County finals in eight of the last nine years (2013-19, '21). Miller has also served as the head coach of the New York Athletic Club's lacrosse team since 2017, leading it to the 2018 and '19 American Lacrosse League titles.

Miller was part of leading two programs to the Connecticut State Semifinals in back-to-back years - 2000 as head coach at Greenwich High School and 2001 as offensive coordinator at Darien High School. Additionally, he helped guide Darien HS to the 2001 Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference crown.

As a player, Miller earned All-America honors at Nassau Community College in 1994 before arriving at Hofstra where he would be named an Honorable Mention All-American in 1996. Additionally, he was named the 1996 North Atlantic Conference Lacrosse Player of the Year. A two-time member of the US National Team, he led the United States to gold at the 1998 World Lacrosse Championship and silver at the 2006 World Lacrosse Championship. He played professionally for the Bridgeport Barrage (2001-03), Philadelphia Barrage (2004), Long Island Lizards (2005-2010) and retired as a member of the Chesapeake Bayhawks in 2011. A six-time Major League Lacrosse (MLL) All-Star (2001-06), he was named the 2004 MLL Offensive Player of the Year after guiding the Philadelphia Barrage to the 2004 MLL Championship. The two-time MLL All-Pro (2005 and '06) holds the league record for most goals scored by a midfielder in a single season.

He also played professionally in the National Lacrosse League, seeing stints with the New York Saints (1997-2001), New Jersey Storm (2001-03), Anaheim Storm (2003-04) and New York Titans (2006-07).

Miller was inducted into the Manhasset Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Long Island Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2011.

Miller and his wife Allison reside in Annapolis with their children Blake and Avery.

"From the moment I met Blake in 1995 as a college freshman, I was impressed by his captivating presence and work ethic," said Amplo. "Back then, he worked his way to be one of the better players of our generation. Since then, he has jumped into the coaching ranks and helped develop some of our nation's best high school lacrosse players. Now, I could not be more thrilled that he has joined our staff at the United States Naval Academy. His energy, spirit and drive to succeed will allow Blake to have a lasting impact on our midshipmen."

"I could not be more proud to be part of the Navy men's lacrosse program," said Miller. "It is an honor and privilege to be able to coach such a special group of young men at an institution with so much tradition and history. Coach Amplo and I played together at Hofstra and I've always had a great deal of respect for him as a person, fellow teammate and now as one of the most talented and motivational coaches today. Plus, with two exceptional coaches like John Orsen and Brad Ross rounding out the staff, I knew it was a unique opportunity that I just couldn't pass up. Coaches Amplo, Orsen and Ross are not only among the best at what they do, they also happen to be a great group of guys to know and work with. I am thankful for the opportunity and my family and I look forward to living in Annapolis and being part of the Navy family."

Murray joins the program after spending the last three-plus years at Denver (March 2018-2021) primarily working with the men's lacrosse and volleyball programs. While at Denver, the Pioneer lacrosse program put together a 39-16 record (.709), won three BIG EAST regular-season titles (2018, '19, '21) and made two NCAA Tournament appearances (2018, '21). Additionally, five players earned BIG EAST major awards, 22 All-BIG EAST certificates were awarded and 15 players were named All-Americans during his tenure.

Prior to his stint at Denver, Murray spent three years at Boston University - two years as a Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach (2015-17) and one as a full-time Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach (2017-18). He served as an intern with the football strength and conditioning staff at the University of Iowa (summer 2016), while also completing an internship with Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning (2014).

A native of Springfield, Massachusetts, Murray earned his Bachelor of Science in exercise science from Endicott College in 2014 and graduated from Boston University with a master's degree in applied human development and coaching in 2017.

"Building upon the tremendous legacy that Kirk Woolfolk leaves behind was going to be a challenge, but I am very confident we will continue to be at the forefront of player development with the addition of Tim Murray," said Amplo. "He comes to us from Denver and brings a fresh approach to athlete development that will build upon the foundation already in place."

"I am beyond grateful to have the opportunity to continue my career at the United States Naval Academy," said Murray. "Being a part of one of the top leadership institutions in the world is humbling and exciting. I am looking forward to serving the midshipmen, while assisting in their physical training. Coach Amplo is one of the best and I am honored to be able to assist with the performance enhancement of one of the most historic lacrosse programs in the country."

After five seasons on the Navy coaching staff, Camposa has moved into a supporting role off the field. In addition to assisting the Director of Sports Technology in the management of information systems, program operation and facility management, Camposa will have direct oversight of video and technology operations for the lacrosse program, upkeep and management of marquee facilities and management of student-athletes ensuring accomplishment of all directives while maintaining the academic standards and military requirements of the Naval Academy.

Under Camposa's tutelage, Spencer Rees garnered All-America honors this past spring in his first year as a starter and was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year. Rees boasted the nation's third-best save percentage (.589), was fifth in saves per game (14.00) and stood 16th in goals against average (9.88). Ryan Kern also flourished under Camposa's direction, earning Second-Team All-Patriot League honors as a sophomore in 2018 and finishing his career ranked seventh on the Mids' all-time saves leader board with 465. He was on track to become just the fifth player in program history to post 500-plus career saves when the COVID-19 pandemic struck and the 2019 season abruptly came to a close just five games into his senior season.

"Keeping Rob on board in a more permanent role is something I have wanted to do since I arrived," added Amplo. "His loyalty and love for this program are second to none and he will thrive in his new role."
