Late Runs In Each Set Push Navy Past Colgate

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Outside hitters Jamie Llewellyn (So., Port Deposit, Md.) and Cami Herman (Sr., Brookfield, Wis.) combined for more than half of Navy's kills during a three-set sweep by the Mids (5-6, 1-1 Patriot League) of Colgate (5-7, 2-1), Friday night at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis.  Navy defeated Colgate, 26-24, 25-21, 25-19.

Llewellyn (14 kills) and Herman (10) accounted for 24 of Navy's 46 kills in the match.  The duo also combined for just four attack errors on 45 swings for a hitting percentage of .444.

"Jamie was seeing the block and the defense really well tonight," said Navy head coach Paco Labrador.  "She carried us down the stretch.  I couldn't be happier for her.  Cami bailed us out of some tough spots with some savvy swings off th block.

"Lots of numbers might jump off the page, but this win happened in our practices this week.  Each player was contributing to the preparation, film study and competitive mindset.  There was a collective will to win this match."

The opening set was a close one as the largest lead for both teams was three points, and those advantages came well before the midpoint of the frame.  The score was tied at 13, 14, 15, 16 and 18, then Colgate took a 20-18 lead.  After a pair of sideouts made the score 21-19, Navy scored three-straight points to take a 22-21 advantage.  The Raiders sided out to tie the set, then a Llewellyn kill returned the serve to Navy with a 23-22 lead. A Navy hitting error tied the set again, but Herman broke the tie with a kill to take the Mids to set point with a 24-23 lead.  The Raiders staved off the opportunity for Navy to win the set with a kill, then Maggie Bodman (So., Northbrook, Ill.) and Avery Stowell (Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) combined for a block to give the Mids a 25-24 lead.  Bodman knocked down an overpass on the ensuing point to give Navy the 1-0 lead.

Navy tried to break away from Colgate several times in set two, but the Raiders were able to fight back into the stanza.  The Mids led 10-6, only to see the score tied at 11.  Navy then took leads of 15-11 and 19-16, but saw Colgate tied the set at 20.  Anna Klemeyer (So., Sarasota, Fla.) recorded a kill to break the tie, Llewellyn posted a kill and the team of Klemeyer and Stowell combined for a block to give Navy a 23-20 lead.  The Raiders recorded a sideout on a kill, but that was followed by kills from Llewellyn and Klemeyer to close out the set.

Colgate's sense of urgency kicked in early in set three as the Raiders built a 12-6 advantage.  Navy tied the score at 15, then the score was tied at both 16 and 17.  The Mids registered back-to-back points, then the Raiders did the same to tie the score at 19.  That led to Labrador calling a timeout.  The stoppage in action worked as the ensuing Colgate serve was too long, thus giving the serve to the Mids with a 20-19 lead.  A Llewellyn kill doubled the lead to 21-19, a Colgate attack error made it a three-point cushion and then Llewellyn took Navy to match point with another kill.  She then ended the match with a career-high tying kill.

Llewellyn would post six kills and one error on nine attempts in the final set.

Navy held statistical advantages over Colgate in kills (46-35), hitting percentage (.250-.186), digs (41-32) and blocks (8-5).  Each team dropped in three aces, but the Mids had only four service errors while the Raiders had nine.

"Our servers and passers really won the battle tonight," said Labrador.  "Colgate has a high-octane offense and our severs put them in some predictable situations."

Llewellyn ended the night with 14 kills and two errors on 24 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage and she also led the Mids with two aces.  Herman tallied 10 kills and two errors on 21 swings for a .381 hitting performance.  Bodman just missed double figures as she finished with nine kills and a .312 attack percentage, and she led the way with six blocks.  Additionally on defense, Kimberly Lynch (Sr., Murrieta, Calif.) snared 14 digs.

"Maggie was really dialed in with her blocking our setters found her in some great spots to score," said Labrador.

Averi Miller (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) dished out 21 assists and Celie Feighery (Jr., Oak Hill, Va.) recorded 15 assists.

Navy will be back on the Wesley A. Brown Field House court Saturday at 7 p.m. when the Mids play host to Army.

"We will enjoy the victory, but put our minds on to our next opponent," said Labrador.
