Second-Half Run Takes Mids Past Terriers

BOSTON, Mass. –– A run of eight-straight made field goals in the early minutes of the second half carried the Navy (12-5, 5-1 Patriot League) men's basketball team to a 72-65 victory over Boston University (11-8, 2-4), Sunday afternoon at Case Gym in Boston, Mass.

The victory gave the Mids their first regular season sweep of the Terriers since Boston U. joined the league for the 2013-14 season (the Terriers have swept the Mids twice).  It also was Navy's school-record eighth-straight Patriot League road win, which bettered the mark of seven road wins in a row set from the end of the 1997 league season to the start of the 1998 campaign.

"We just played better in the second half (than the first half)," said Navy head coach Ed DeChellis.  "Defensively we were better, we executed better and I liked the energy we had.  It was a solid defensive effort.

"It is hard to go on the road and beat a quality team such as Boston."

The Terriers scored the first nine points of the game and held the Mids without a point until the 16:25 mark and without a made field goal until there was 15:56 remaining.  Navy chipped away at the deficit and took its first lead at 17-16 following a pair of made free throws by Austin Inge (So., Greensboro, N.C.) with 9:21 left on the clock.  That was the first of four lead changes over a span of four minutes.  The Mids soon held a 28-25 lead after Jaylen Walker (Jr., Allen, Texas) made a basket and foul shot with 2:53 remaining before halftime.

Back came the Terriers with a quick 7-0 run to take a 32-28 lead with 56 seconds still to play.  The Mids added one more field goal by Walker to go into halftime trailing 32-30.

Boston U. shot 60.9 percent from the field in the first half and limited Navy to a 41.4-percent effort.  The Mids scored 11 of their points after the nine turnovers they forced, while the Terriers accrued six points after the four Navy turnovers.

Individually, Walker's seven points helped the Mids to a 16-8 advantage in bench points.  On the other end of the floor, center Sukhmail Mathon was 5-5 from the floor in scoring 10 points for the Terriers.

Navy made its first eight shots from the field at the start of the second half to score the first seven points of the frame (37-32) and take a 49-38 advantage with 13:59 showing on the clock.  The last eight points of that span came from Patrick Dorsey (Jr., Raleigh, N.C.) as he made two triples sandwiched around a layup over the course of three possessions, which gave the Mids a 19-6 run to start the stanza.  Defensively, the Mids held the Terriers without a made field goal for the first four minutes of the half.  The run was stretched to 21-6 after Dorsey fed Daniel Deaver (Jr., Falls Church, Va.) for a layup on Navy's ensuing trip down the court to make the score 51-38 with just under 13 minutes remaining.  Deaver's field goal, which followed the team's first missed shot of the half and an offensive rebound, gave Navy baskets on nine-straight possessions after it originally started the second half with a turnover.

The teams traded scores until John Carter Jr. (Sr., Spring Hill, Tenn.) made a basket and foul shot to push the advantage out to a game-high 17 points at 63-46 with 7:47 remaining.  It eventually was a 68-55 cushion with 3:25 left following two made free throws by Carter.  The Terriers then began one more push at the Mids and closed to within 68-61 with 42.6 seconds left when Ethan Brittain-Watts was fouled while making a layup.  He missed the foul shot, but the loose carom was knocked out of bounds by the Mids to give the ball back into the hands of the Terriers.  A quick three-point attempt by Jonas Harper followed.  He missed the effort and it was snared by Walker, who was fouled with 36.1 seconds remaining.  He would convert both attempts from the foul line to make it a three-possession game at 70-61.

Navy outscored Boston U. 42-33 in the second half and 72-56 after the Terriers began the game with a 9-0 lead.

The Mids were 14-25 (56%) from the field in the second half to end the game with an overall mark of 48.1 percent.  Navy also made 81 percent (17-21) of its free throw attempts on the afternoon.  The Terriers shot 33.3 percent (10-30) in the second half to produce an overall mark of 45.3 percent.  Boston U. also was 0-8 from three-point land in the second half and 2-11 (18.2%) from beyond the arc for the game.

Navy narrowly won the rebounding (32-31) and turnover (14-13) statistical battles, but held a decisive advantage of 39-16 in bench points.  Leading the way for the reserves were Dorsey with 12 points and Walker with 11.  Scoring nine points for the Mids were Summers, who came off the bench in what was his first game back since the league opener, Carter and Richard Njoku (Sr., Washington, D.C.).  Carter also grabbed a Navy-best six rebounds.

"We are a deep team," said DeChellis.  "Guys are contributing in ways that may not show up in the box score.  Sean Yoder (Jr., Dublin, Ohio) didn't score in the second half, but had a few tips that led to steals and got on the floor for some loose balls."

Mathon finished the game 9-12 from the field and 6-8 from the foul line to total 24 points and also add 14 rebounds.

Navy now begins a week of home games, which starts Wednesday night against Lehigh and ends Saturday afternoon against Army.
