Track and Field Hosts Annual Wesley Brown Invitational

Multi events begin Friday at 4:00 p.m. and continue at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Field events begin at 9:30 a.m. and running events start at 12:15 p.m.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy track and field team will host the annual Wesley A. Brown Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21-22 at Wesley A. Brown Field House. Competition begins with the multi events on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The multi events continue on Saturday morning beginning at 9:30 a.m. Field events are slated for Saturday at 9:30 a.m., while the running events start at 12:15 p.m. Admission to the meet is FREE.

Lieutenant Commander Wesley A. Brown, CEC, USN, (Ret.)
The late Lieutenant Commander Wesley A. Brown, CEC, USN, (Ret.), who the Navy indoor track and field facility is named for, was the first African American to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy. Brown was born April 3, 1927 in Baltimore, Md. He graduated from Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., where he was Cadet Corps Regimental Commander during his senior year. Nominated for admission by New York Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Brown entered the Academy in 1945 and graduated in June of 1949. Lt. Cmdr. Brown, a veteran of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retired in June 1969 after serving 20 years in the Navy's Civil Engineer Corps. He holds the Navy Commendation Medal, World War II and Korean War Victory, Korean Service, and American Theater and Antarctic Service Ribbons. Brown passed away in 2012.

Accessing the Naval Academy
The Naval Academy is closed to all vehicles without a Department of Defense-approved identification card. All other visitors must either walk through one of the security gates or ride the shuttle bus. The free shuttle bus service begins one hour before all meets. Whether walking on or riding the shuttle bus, those ages 18 and over must present a photo identification card (driver's license) to gain access and those ages 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
 
The shuttle will depart from the blue (west) side parking lot at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Enter the lot off of Taylor Avenue (south side of the stadium). There is a $5 parking fee per vehicle. The shuttle will depart from and return to the bus stop next to the Blue Angel jet.
 
COVID-19 Policy
As per Department of Defense regulations, those who have not been vaccinated must wear a mask at all times when on the USNA grounds and those who have been vaccinated have the option to wear a mask while outdoors but must wear a mask while indoors. Additionally, masks must be worn by everyone regardless of vaccination status while riding the shuttle bus.

Trio of Mids Earn Patriot League Track and Field Weekly Honors
The Patriot League announced its weekly track and field awards and Navy claimed three of the six honors. Alex Rizzo (Bronxville, N.Y.) and Jessica Nangle (South Hampton, Pa.) were named Men's and Women's Track Athletes of the Week, respectively, while freshman Sebasteon Allen (East Orange, N.J.) earned Men's Rookie of the Week honors.
 
Rizzo helped Navy to a 90-86 victory over Princeton in the annual Navy-Princeton Dual Meet. Rizzo won the 3,000m run with an IC4A qualifying time of 8:02.04. The time was the 10th fastest performance in Navy history. In addition, Rizzo's time is the 11th best time in the NCAA this season and the top time in the Patriot League on the year by 10 seconds. Rizzo earned five points for the win, helping Navy to the four-point victory.
 
Nangle posted an ECAC qualifying time of 9:40.85 in the 3,000m run, registering the fourth best performance in Navy history. The time was also a Wesley A. Brown Field House Facility record. Nangle's time is the top performance in the 3,000m in the Patriot League this season.
 
Allen registered an IC4A qualifying mark in the triple jump, winning the event with a distance of 14.70m (48-02.75). He also competed in the long jump, finishing in third (tops among freshmen) with a distance of 6.91m (22-08.00). Allen recorded the top distance in the triple jump in the Patriot League and 70th best in the NCAA.
 
Last Time Out: vs. Princeton (Jan. 15, 2022)
Navy split a dual meet against Princeton at Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis. The Navy men's team registered a 90-86 victory, while the women's team dropped a 103-77 decision to the Tigers.
 
On the day, Navy recorded 31 IC4A / ECAC qualifying time / marks with 14 wins and a facility record.
 
Navy opened the day with a 90-86 victory over Princeton. The men's team registered 10 wins on the day with 25 IC4A qualifiers to post the victory.
 
On the women's side, the Navy were unable to overcome a strong start by Princeton, dropping a 103-77 decision to the Tigers. The Midshipmen finished with six ECAC qualifiers and four victories, while also setting a facility record during the meet.
