ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy women's lacrosse head coach Cindy Timchal announced today that Maddie McDaniel has joined her coaching staff as a volunteer assistant for the 2022 season. McDaniel, who was an All-Region performer at James Madison and USC, will work directly with the Mids' midfielders and draw control unit.
 
"I am beyond excited to be able to join this coaching staff," McDaniel said. "Growing up just 10 minutes away and having a cousin play men's lacrosse at the Naval Academy, I have always looked up to the student-athletes that attend this prestigious school. It is an honor to be able to coach our country's next group of service women. I want to thank Coach Timchal and Mr. Gladchuk for reaching out to me and giving me this opportunity. I am so excited for the season!"
 
"We are super excited to have Maddie as part of the Navy women's lacrosse program," said Timchal. "She is a local coach who went to Severn School and won a National Championship at James Madison before finishing up her extra year at USC. She is a welcomed addition who brings a lot of experience to our program."
 
McDaniel was a four-year member of the James Madison women's lacrosse team (2017-20) before playing her final year of eligibility at USC (2021).
 
In four seasons at James Madison, McDaniel helped the Dukes to a 57-13 (.814) overall record with three trips to the NCAA Tournament, including winning the 2018 National Championship. A two-time team captain, she played in 68 games, making 44 starts with 95 goals and seven assists. She picked up 33 ground balls and caused 19 turnovers, while winning 187 career draws. For her efforts, McDaniel was named IWLCA Second Team All-Region (2019), First Team All-CAA (2019), CAA All-Rookie (2017), CAA All-Tournament Team (2019) and CAA Championship Most Outstanding Performer (2019. In addition, she was a multi-time member of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll.
 
At USC, McDaniel was named First Team IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region and First Team All-Pac-12. She started all 16 games, scoring 19 goals with five assists for 24 points. A draw control specialist, she won 149 draws, which ranked fifth all-time in USC history for career draws. McDaniel posted eight games with double-digit draw controls, including the second most in a single game in program history with 16 against San Diego State. Off the field, McDaniel was a member of the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll and a Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarship recipient.
 
Prior to James Madison, the Severna Park, Md. native was a standout at the Severn School. She was a US Lacrosse All-American (2x), Under Armour Underclassman All-American, USA Today All-USA Team (third team), Baltimore Sun All-Metro (2x), Washington Post All-Metro (2x), All-IAAM-A Conference (2x), All-County (3x), team MVP, and Maximum Exposure All-Star. McDaniel tallied 110 goals and 288 draw controls in her final two high school seasons, helping Severn School to IAAM-A Conference semifinals as a senior and quarterfinals as a junior.
 
A dual-sport athlete in high school, McDaniel also started four years in basketball at Severn School. She concluded her basketball career as a four-time All-IAAM-B Conference and four-time All-County honoree, as well as the Anne Arundel County Player of the Year (2016). McDaniel ended her high school career as Severn School basketball's all-time leading scorer (1,864) and rebounder (1,204) – the only player in school history with more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
 
McDaniel earned the Severn School Class of '23 Overall Athletic Award as a senior, while also being a member of the Headmaster's List and Honor Roll.
 
McDaniel graduated with a degree in communication studies from James Madison University in 2020, and went on to earn her master's degree in communication management from the University of Southern California in 2021.
