ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- In a match between the two teams tied for second place in the Patriot League standings, Army (12-8, 8-2) rallied from a 2-1 deficit in sets to defeat the Navy (10-9, 7-3) volleyball team, 25-19, 21-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-11, Friday night at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis.
"First and foremost," said Navy head coach
Paco Labrador, "our entire volleyball program deeply appreciates the unparalleled level of fan support tonight throughout the match. We couldn't have asked for a better homecourt environment than what we had this evening.
"Army continues to make the big plays, the physical plays, when they needed it the most. We contained a couple of their hitters really well, but Army found a couple of hot hitters down the stretch."
Set One
Army jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the start of the match. Navy was able to slice the deficit down to five points at 13-8, but the Black Knights scored the next three points to fully separate from the Mids.
Army registered 14 kills in the opening set in contrast to the eight kills -- and eight attack errors -- recorded by Navy.
Set Two
Navy held a 12-10 lead when a block started a 3-0 run for the Mids that gave them 15-10 lead. It soon was an 18-14 advantage for the Mids before the Black Knights tied the frame at 19-19. The teams exchanged points to tie the score at 20-20, then
Maggie Bodman (Jr., Northbrook, Ill.) posted a kill and
Celie Feighery (Sr., Oak Hill, Va.) followed with an ace to give the Mids a 22-20 lead. Army cut the margin in half with a kill, but two attack errors by the Black Knights sandwiched around a service ace for
Jamie Llewellyn (Jr., Port Deposit, Md.) gave the Mids the set.
Navy's offense rebounded in the second set to post 14 kills and a .290 attack percentage. Bodman recorded four kills and no attack errors on five attempts.
Set Three
Similar to set two, Navy went on a 4-0 run that gave it a 14-9 advantage in set three. Army drew to within one point at 14-13, but another 4-0 run by the Mids gave them an 18-13 lead. Back came the Black Knights and they were able to close the margin down to one point at both 22-21 and 23-22.
Jamie Llewellyn knocked down kills on each of the next two points to close out the stanza.
Jamie Llewellyn accounted for five of Navy's 14 kills in the third set, and her sister,
Jordan Llewellyn (Jr., Port Deposit, Md.), tallied six kills.
Set Four
Army scored the first three points on its way to taking an 11-5 lead. Navy chipped away at the deficit and tied the score at 17-17. The Black Knights answered with a 4-1 run to take 21-18 advantage. From there, the teams played sideout volleyball with them alternating points through to the end of the set.
Set Five
Army opened the set with leads of 3-0 and 6-1. It eventually was a 10-4 Army advantage before Navy started to claw back with a 3-0 run to make the score 10-7. Just as at the end of set four, the teams exchanged every point the rest of the way.
Army posted eight kills and one attack error and hit .438 in the final set while Navy totaled six kills, three attack errors and a .200 hitting percentage.
Statistical Summary
As would be expected in a five-set match that lasted nearly two and one-half hours, the team statistics were pretty similar. Army's offense recorded 60 kills and 32 attack errors on 160 attempts for a .175 hitting night, while Navy totaled 54 kills and 30 attack errors on 157 swings for a .153 hitting percentage. Army also held slim leads in both digs (64-57) and blocks (14-12). Navy had six aces and 11 service errors while Army had four aces and seven service errors.
Jamie Llewellyn led a trio of Mids in double figure kills with 16,
Hannah Hoover (So., Katy, Texas) was one of four Mids with double figure digs with 14 and
Anna Klemeyer (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) posted eight blocks.
"We still have a lot of volleyball to play over the next month," said Labrador. "I'm certain this match will fuel us down the stretch of Patriot League play."
