Opening Kick
• Navy and Tulsa meet for the 10th time overall and the eighth time as American Athletic Conference foes when the two square off on Saturday afternoon (3:30 pm ET) at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (34,000).
• Navy enters Saturday's contest as one of only three AAC teams to have played 2 conference games (Memphis and East Carolina are the others).
• The Mids are currently in fourth place in the AAC with a 1-1 record, while Tulsa is one of four conference teams that stand 0-1 in AAC play. Memphis is currently atop the conference standings with a 2-0 mark, while Cincinnati and Tulane are 1-0. The Mids have already lost to Memphis and will play at Cincinnati on Nov. 5. Navy does not play Tulane this year.
• Navy leads the all-time series against the Golden Hurricane 7-2, but is just 2-2 against Tulsa at home. The last time these two teams played in Annapolis was on Dec. 5, 2020, when Tulsa won 19-6 in front of no fans during COVID. That game marked the only time
Ken Niumatalolo has lost to Tulsa (6-1). Navy won last year's contest in Tulsa 20-17.
• This is the 142nd year of Navy football. The Mids have produced an all-time record of 730-588-57.
• The 730 wins are tied with Wisconsin for the 24th most in history among schools in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Broadcast Coverage
• CBS Sports Network will carry Saturday's game with John Sadak (play by play), Randy Cross (color) and Sheehan Stanwick Burch (sidelines) on the call.
• Scott Wykoff will host a 30-minute pregame show on WBAL Radio (1090 AM) starting at 2:00 pm.
• The Navy Football Pregame Show with Pete Medhurst, Joe Miller, Keith Mills, Wykoff and special commentary from John Feinstein will get underway at 2:30 pm ET on the Navy Radio Network, followed by game action beginning at 3:30 pm ET with Medhurst, Miller and Mills on the call.
• Following the contest, Medhurst, Miller, Mills and Wykoff will recap the day's events in a 30-minute postgame show.
Game Day Festivities
• The Navy football team will arrive at the Blue Angel on the West (Blue) side of the stadium at approximately 1:00 pm. The team will walk down the sidewalk and through NavyFest before walking to the tunnel. Fans are invited to stand on both sides of the sidewalk to cheer on the players.
• The March-On of the Brigade of Midshipmen will begin at 3:11 pm.
• The National Anthem will take place at 3:21:30 pm, followed by a flyover at the conclusion of the national anthem and a parachute jumper (3:24 pm).
• Saturday's flyover will feature two Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornets from the "Gladiators" of Strike Fighter Squadron ONE ZERO SIX based out of Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia Beach, Va. The lead aircraft will be flown by Lt. William Shuttleworth, USNA Class of 2013 and Weapon Systems Officer Lt. Tyler Sposato, USNA Class of 2014. The wing aircraft will be flown by Lt. Michael Fiorelli, USNA Class of 2013 and Weapons System Officer Lt. Wyatt Hill, USNA Class of 2014. Providing ground control will be Lt. Sean Freitas, USNA Class of 2013 and Lt. Justin Lamascus, USNA Class of 2013. Each member of Saturday's flyover currently serve as instructors in the Navy's East Coast Super Hornet Fleet Replacement Squadron. The squadron's primary mission is to train newly-winged pilots and weapons systems officers how to operate and tactically employ the Super Hornet through a syllabus that encompasses the multi-mission capabilities of the Navy's primary multi-role strike fighter.
• Navy will take the field at 3:28:30 pm, while Tulsa will follow at 3:29 pm.
• Kickoff on Saturday is slated for 3:32 pm.
• There is the possibility that all times could be pushed back by 5 minutes if the first game on CBS Sports Network is running long. That determination will be made by the network no later than 2:32 pm.
• Between the first and the second quarters, the Navy men's and women's cross country teams and the men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field teams will be recognized for winning 6 Patriot League Championships and going 6-0 vs. Army last year.
• The Naval Academy Drum and Bugle Corps will perform at halftime.
• The pilots from the pregame flyover will be recognized between the third and fourth quarters.
• Following the game, Navy's alma mater, Navy Blue & Gold, will be played as the team stands at attention in front of the Brigade of Midshipmen. It is one of the best traditions in all of sports.
Scouting Tulsa
2-3 Overall | 0-1 AAC
Head Coach: Philip Montgomery
• Tulsa enters Saturday's game with a 2-3 record and an 0-1 mark in the American Athletic Conference. However, don't let Tulsa's record fool you.
• The Golden Hurricane have wins over Northern Illinois (38-35) and Jacksonville State (54-17), who is currently 5-1 on the year.
• Tulsa's losses have come against a Wyoming team that handled Air Force (40-37 in 2OT), at #9 and undefeated Ole Miss (35-27) and against American Athletic Conference power and #24-ranked Cincinnati (31-21).
• Tulsa is led by redshirt senior quarterback Davis Brin, who has completed 101 of his 168 passes for 1,555 yards (#9 nationally) with 12 touchdowns (#19th nationally) and just 3 interceptions. Brin is averaging 15.4 yards per completion, which is the third-best mark in the country and is 23rd in total offense per game (296.8) and 14th in passing yards per attempt (9.3).
• Brin has been hobbled with an ankle injury of late. If he is unable to play on Saturday, the Golden Hurricane have a very capable backup in redshirt freshman Braylon Braxton (14-28 / 121 yards / 2 touchdowns / 1 interception).
• Tulsa is 10th in the nation in passing offense (336.6 yds/gm) and 13th in passing yards per completion (14.51).
• Tulsa has one of the most dangerous receiving corps in the AAC with graduate students Keylon Stokes (37 catches / 613 yards / 3 TDs) and JuanCarlos Santana (22 catches / 411 yards / 4 TDs). Graduate student wide receiver and Kentucky transfer Isaiah Epps has added 4 touchdown catches to go along with his 18 catches. Stokes ranks 22nd in the country in all-purpose yards (136.8 yds/gm) seventh in catches per game (7.4) and third in receiving yards per game (122.6).
• The Tulsa running game got a big lift last week against Cincinnati with the return of senior running back Deneric Price. Price, who had not played all year, carried the ball 18 times for 71 yards and 2 touchdowns against the Bearcats. Price transferred to Tulsa from Texas AS&M.
• Tulsa likes to possess the ball, averaging 32:48 per game which ranks 19th in the country.
• The Tulsa defense is led by graduate student Bryson Powers (47 tackles) and redshirt senior Justin Wright (38 tackles). Redshirt senior safety Kendarin Ray has 31 tackles, a fumble recovery and 2 caused fumbles. Ray is tied for 10th in the country in forced fumbles per game, while Ray is 24th nationally in tackles per game (9.4)
• Graduate student field goal kicker Zack Long has made 7 of his 10 field goal attempts and his 1.4 field goals per game ranks 24th in the country.
• Redshirt junior punter Lachian Wilson stands ninth in the country in punting (46 yds/punt).
Reestablishing Home Field Dominance
• Navy is 55-24 (.696) at home under head coach
Ken Niumatalolo, but just 2-11 (.154) over the last 3 years (one of those years was the COVID year with no fans in the stands).
• Navy has been held to 10 points or less in 6 of its last 13 home games.
Navy Defense Tough Against The Run
• The Navy defense ranks 25th in the country against the run, giving up just 101.8 rushing yards per game.
• Last week, Navy held Air Force, the nation's leader in rushing (412.2 yds/gm) to just 200 yards on the ground.
• Navy gave up 13 yards on 29 carries to Delaware, 91 yards on 32 carries to Memphis and 103 yards on 28 carries to East Carolina.
Busic Leads The Navy Sack Exchange
• Navy has recorded 12 sacks in its 4 games this season after recording just 16 sacks all of last year (12 gms).
• Junior defensive end
Jacob Busic leads the Mids with 4 sacks, while senior striker
John Marshall and sophomore linebacker
Tyler Fletcher have 2 each.
• Eight different Mids have recorded at least a half a sack this season, only two of which are seniors (Marshall and
Nicholas Straw).
• Navy is 18th in the country in sacks, averaging 3.0 per contest, while Busic is tied for seventh nationally in sacks per game (1.0).
• The four sacks by Busic are the most by a Navy player since 2019 when
Diego Fagot had 5.5 sacks. He has recorded at least a 1/2 sack in every game this year. He also caused a fumble and recovered it against Air Force.
