Box Score ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team registered five group singles titles and one doubles flight title at the season-ending Navy Gold Invitational held this weekend in Annapolis. The flighted round-robin tournament, which also featured players from Long Island, NJIT, Wagner, Delaware and Monmouth, was the final competition of the fall season for the Mids.
Winning the D doubles title was the team of
Cy McLeod (So., Augusta, Ga.) and
Christian Pumpelly (Sr., Atlanta, Ga.). The pair posted a trio of 6-2 wins and lost its only match by the score of 6-4.
In singles,
Sasha Panyan (Jr., Lutherville, Md.) did not drop a set in his three matches to win group one of the A flight. Nearly matching that effort were Pumpelly and
Matthew McNair (Fr., Annapolis, Md.). Each of the two players lost just one set in winning their three matches. Pumpelly won the group two of the E flight and McNair won group one of the F flight.
J.J. Etterbeek (Fr., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and
Nathan Nguyen (Fr., McLean, Va.) each posted 2-1 records on their way to winning groups. Etterbeek and Monmouth's Alex Zuckerman each posted 2-1 records in group two of the B flight, but Etterbeek won the head-to-head match between the two players. Etterbeek held a 7-6 lead in a 10-point tiebreaker played in place of a complete third set when Zuckerman had to retire due to an injury.
Nguyen also won a head-to-head match to earn the tiebreaker that enabled him to win group two of the D flight. He and LIU's Sergio Fernandez Romera tied each other with 2-1 records, but Nguyen won the match played between the two, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3).
