ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's lacrosse team (1-0) won its 200th game in program history as the Midshipmen defeated Cal (0-1) on Friday afternoon, 18-10, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. The Mids used a balanced attack as 10 different student-athletes found the back of the net, including four who scored multiple goals.
"This is a great home-opener win against a Pac-12 school," head coach
Cindy Timchal said after the game. "I thought that Cal came ready to play. They came well prepared. We lost a couple of starters due to [yellow] cards, but we are proud to overcome that. We will learn from it and be a better team because of it. We needed to compete against a team like this. I am proud for the win and that our team overcame the close game and did what they needed to secure the victory."
Offensively, the Mids were led by seniors
Bobbie Haney (Woodbine, Md.) and
Kasey Dietzel (Warrington, Pa.). The duo each netted a pair of goals and added two assists apiece to finish the day with a team-best four points. For Haney, it was her first collegiate start and first career goals.
Leelee Denton (Nashville, Tenn.) and
Jaimeson Meyer (Sandy, Utah) each finished the day with hat tricks, finding the back of the cage three times apiece.
Lindsay Beardmore (Annapolis, Md.) chipped in three points on a pair of goals and an assist, while Regan Roelofs (Apple Valley, Minn.) added two scores.
Gil Eby (Towson, Md.),
Christine Fiore (Darien, Conn.)
Lola Leone (Bay Shore, N.Y.), and
Charlotte Ryan (Tully, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for Navy.
Defensively, the Mids picked up 19 ground balls and tallied 11 saves.
Grace Loughery (Perkasie, Pa.) grabbed a team-high five ground balls in the game, while Eby added three. Fiore and
Alexis Bell (Johns Creek, Ga.) combined to cause the two turnovers for the Mids in the game.
Jo Torres (Prince Frederick, Md.) finished the game with 11 saves, marking the sophomore's third double-digit save performance of her career. In addition she picked up a ground ball en route to the victory.
For Cal, Liz Scott and Amanda Morse led the offensive attack, finishing the game with three goals apiece. The Golden Bears used a pair of goalies who each allowed nine goals with a combined seven stops.
Navy was the first team to score, opening play with a 5-0 run. Haney put the home team on the scoreboard, converting a free-position opportunity. Fiore and Dietzel followed with back-to-back goals to put the Mids in front 3-0 midway through the first quarter. Leone scored her first collegiate goal to extend the run and Denton capped the 5-0 run with her first score of the day. With 49 seconds remaining in the quarter, Cal found the back of the net, but Beardmore answered to end the first quarter with Navy in front, 6-1.
In the second quarter, the Golden Bears used back-to-back goals to trim the margin to 6-3. Ryan scored to push the advantage back to four goals, but Cal answered. Roelofs scored her two goals in succession give the Mids a 9-4 edge. The visitors used a pair of scores to trim the margin to 9-6 at halftime.
Haney and Eby opened up the third quarter with goals to extend the Navy lead to 11-6. Following a Cal goal, Meyer netted her first collegiate goal. The Golden Bears once again trimmed the margin to four, but Denton ended the third quarter with a goal to extend the lead to five, 13-8.
Cal scored to begin the scoring in the fourth quarter, but Navy countered with four straight goals to take control of the game. Denton began the 4-0 run with a goal with Dietzel, Beardmore, and Meyer following to give the Mids a 17-9 lead. The Golden Bears scored to give them double digits, but Meyer completed her hat trick to provide the final margin, 18-10.
Navy returns to action next week with a pair of home games. The Midshipmen welcome George Mason on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 5:00 p.m. before hosting George Washington on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 4:00 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will be available.
