ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's tennis team (9-1) swept its doubleheader against Brown (3-5) and George Mason (2-3) Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Mids defeated the Patriots, 7-0, to open the day before downing the Bears in the second half of the twin bill, 6-1.
"It was a tough week with six-week exams, then having to gear up for two competitive matches," said head coach
Keith Puryear. "I felt we did a good job of taking the constructive feedback from last weekend's matches, practicing and then applying some of these things today in both contests. Next week will be equally challenging and we must be prepared."
Following their pair of competitions on Saturday, the Midshipmen improved to 49-11 this spring in singles matches along with having a 27-3 mark as a team in doubles over their first 10 duals. Additionally, Navy has outscored its opponents 58-12 over that same span.
Match One: Navy 7, George Mason 0
Following its first loss of the dual season last time out against Delaware, Navy bounced back by downing George Mason, 7-0, to earn a victory on the front end of its Saturday doubleheader.
In doubles play, the Midshipmen pairing of
Katreina Corpuz (Sr., Ewa Beach, Hawai'i) and
Meghana Komarraju (Sr., Vienna, Va.) earned victory at the No. 2 position over the Patriot pairing of Paige La and Hannah Yang (6-1).
Navy secured the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead over George Mason as the No. 1 pairing of
Casey Accola (Jr., Winter Garden, Fla.) and
Corinne Farid (So., Columbia, Mo.) defeated Savanna Crowell and Francesca Trella (6-2).
In the final doubles match of the competition, the Mids secured the circuit with a hard-fought victory at the No. 3 position by
Stella Ribaudo (So., Chicago, Ill.) and
Parvathi Shanker (Fr., Napa, Calif.) over Grace Hashiguchi and Jackie Nannery (7-6).
With a one-point lead over George Mason in hand, Navy opened singles play with a victory at the No. 3 position by Shanker over Yang (6-3, 6-0) followed by
Sylvia Eklund (Fr., Bellevue, Wash.) downing Nannery at the No. 6 spot in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) to extend the Midshipmen advantage to 3-0 over the Patriots.
The fourth and deciding point of the match was secured for the Mids in the No. 5 competition as
Kate Lee (Fr., Concord, Calif.) defeated Ashley Fitz-Patrick in straight sets (7-5, 6-4) prior to Farid tallying a No. 4 singles win over Brianna Gibbs (7-6, 7-5).
Accola extended the Navy lead to 6-0 over George Mason with a win at the No. 2 singles position over Hashiguchi (7-5, 4-6, 10-5) prior to the final singles match of the day, the No. 1 position, being a three-set decision in favor of
Jillian Taggart (Jr., Fair Oaks, Calif.) over La (6-2, 4-6, 7-6).
Match Two: Navy 6, Brown 1
In its second match of Saturday's twin bill, Navy coupled a strong effort in doubles play with five straight-set victories in singles competition to secure a 6-1 win along with completing a sweep of the twin bill.
Taggart and
Kacey Moore (Sr., Wellington, Fla.) made quick work of the No. 1 doubles match, defeating the Bears' Alexandra Benedetto and Lindsey Hofflander (6-3) before Accola and
Emily Tannenbaum (Fr., Commack, N.Y.) combined to defeat Addison Ahlstrom and Brittany Lau (6-3) to secure the doubles point for the Midshipmen.
Just moments later, the No. 2 doubles match was decided in favor of Corpuz and Komarraju over Olivia Mariotti and Julia Newman (6-3) to secure the sweep of doubles play for Navy.
In singles play, Tannenbaum downed Benedetto in straight sets at the No. 2 position (6-3, 6-0) prior to Komarraju netting a straight-set victory of her own over Hofflander (6-4, 6-3) to extend the Midshipmen lead to 3-0.
Navy garnered the fourth and deciding point for match victory No. 6 spot as Ribaudo defeated Ryan Peus (6-3, 6-3) followed by Moore pushing the Midshipmen lead to 5-0 with a straight-set win at the No. 3 position (6-4, 6-1).
Corpuz earned the final singles victory of the day for the Mids in the No. 4 singles competition, posting a straight-set victory over Gabriella Soliman (6-3, 7-5). The lone point of the match for Brown came at the No. 1 singles position as Lau defeated Taggart (6-4, 6-4).

Navy is slated to continue its five-match homestand Feb. 27 as it welcomes Dartmouth and Fairleigh Dickinson to the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Mids will take on the Big Green at 10 a.m. followed by a tilt against the Knights at 2 p.m.
