Mids Return to Action for Mid-Week Contest Against Coppin State Wednesday

Following its season-opening, two-game sweep of UMBC last time out, the Navy baseball team is slated to return to action 2 p.m. Wednesday as it welcomes Coppin State to Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.

ALL-TIME SERIES vs. COPPIN STATE
In a series that dates back to the 1992 season, Navy holds a 24-7-1 advantage over 32 all-time meetings against Coppin State. The Eagles earned a 12-10 win in the last meeting of the series that took place on April 28, 2020. Prior to that victory by Coppin State, the Midshipmen had won 11-straight games in the series.

SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMEN
LAST TIME OUT: Last time out, Navy opened its 2022 season with a sweep of its two-game series against UMBC. The Midshipmen recorded a pair of walk-off victories in the series, beginning with a 10-9 win Friday followed by an 11-10 victory in 12 innings on Saturday.
 
Logan Keller (So., Longwood, Fla.) led the Mids at the plate over the two games, going a combined 6-for-9 with an RBI and three runs scored while Christian Policelli (Sr., Walkersville, Md.) added a 5-for-10 showing over the two games including a double, two RBI and three runs scored.
 
LEADING THE CHARGE: Along with the efforts of Keller and Policelli at the plate against the Retrievers, Zach Stevens (Sr., Lexington, Mass.) posted a 3-for-8 effort that included a ninth inning, game-tying triple in the second contest of the series. Rounding out the top-performers at the plate through two games for Navy is shortstop Eduardo Diaz (So., Miami, Fla.) who finished the series 4-for-11 with a triple, two RBI and four runs scored.
 
RED-HOT OFFENSE: Over its two games against UMBC, Navy scored 21 runs on 24 hits that included four extra-base hits. The 21 runs over the two games marks the second time in the last three seasons that the Mids have tallied 20 or more runs over their first two games.
 
Along with the trio of Diaz, Keller and Policelli each having four or more hits in the two-game set, a total of five players exit the series with a batting average of .333 or better including Stevens, Hudson Lehnertz (So., Santa Ana, Calif.) and the aforementioned trio of Diaz, Keller and Policelli.
 
KELLER EARNS WEEKLY RECOGNITION: For his efforts in the two-game series against UMBC, Keller was named the Patriot League Player of the Week for the first time in his career. The weekly recognition was the second of the sophomore's career, as he was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week last season for the week of March 2.
 
In the series against the Retrievers, Keller batted .667 while scoring three runs, driving in one and reaching base at a .750 clip. Additionally, the third baseman recorded 10 assists in the field along with three putouts without committing an error.
 
NAVY HITTERS vs. COPPIN STATE: A majority of the current Navy roster has seen action against Coppin State in their respective career's. However, the duo of Stevens and Joe Simourian (Sr., Andover, Mass.) have found success against the Eagles in each of their first three seasons with the program.
 
Simourian has tallied six hits in 13 career at-bats, with a double, two triples, three runs scored and four RBI. In 14 at-bats against Eagle pitching, Stevens has recorded four hits including a double, three RBI and five runs scored. Policelli rounds out the Mids' top-performers against Coppin State
 
NAVY PITCHERS vs. COPPIN STATE: Reece Early (Jr., Reistertown, Md.) had faced Coppin State the most among Navy pitchers on the current roster, having logged seven innings against the Eagles where he allowed just one run on five hits along with striking out four batters. Trent Topping (Sr., Temecula, Calif.) has pitched two innings against Coppin State in his career, striking out two while allowed three runs.
 
NEWCOMERS MAKE AN IMPACT: A pair of freshmen, Owen Archer (Frisco, Texas) and Owen Beisty (Wayne, Pa.), made their impact felt immediately in the Midshipmen's opening-weekend series against UMBC. Beisty appeared in both games against the Retrievers, pitching a clean inning on in the opener where he walked one and struck out a batter prior to allowing two runs and striking out three in his second appearance of the weekend in game two. 
 
Archer was tasked with maintaining a 10-10, 12th-inning tie for Navy against UMBC in his collegiate debut. In the frame, Archer retired the Retrievers in order en route to the Midshipmen earning the win the next inning and improving to 2-0 on the season.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES
AT THE PLATE: Brian Nicolas leads the way at the plate for Coppin State through three games, hitting .455 (5-for-11) with a home run, a double, two walks, two RBI and three runs scored. Tyler Lloyd ranks second on the team with a .400 batting average (4-for-10) that includes two runs scored while Marcos Castillo is hitting .385 (5-for-13) through the Eagles first three games with two doubles and two RBI.
 
ON THE MOUND: Tyler Nichol and Jordan Hamberg lead the way in innings pitched for Coppin State through three games at 4.2 innings apiece. Nichol has a 3.68 ERA after allowing two runs on five hits along with walking four and striking out four in his lone appearance. Hamberg allowed four runs on seven hits along with walking one and striking out four in his appearance.
 
LAST TIME OUT: Coppin State was swept in its season-opening, three-game series against California Baptist last time out. The Eagles fell in the first game of the series, 8-1, followed by a 6-5 loss in game two and a 9-4 defeat in the final game of the three-game set.
 
UP NEXT
Following its contest against Coppin State, the Navy will hit the road for the first time this season as it travels to Kinston, N.C. for a three-game series against rival Air Force. The series is scheduled to open Friday with a 6 p.m. first pitch followed by starts of 2 p.m. on Saturday and 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
