Fourth Quarter Run Lifts Women’s Lacrosse Over the Mount

Trailing by one, Navy used a 5-0 run over a 90-second span to take a lead they would not relinquish.

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Trailing by one in the fourth quarter, Navy women's lacrosse (4-0) used a 5-0 run that spanned 90 seconds to gain a lead over Mount St. Mary's (2-2) that it would not relinquish, holding on for a 13-11 victory at Waldron Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, Md.

Senior captain Reagan Roelofs (Apple Valley, Minn.) scored two goals and added an assist in Navy's 5-0 run. Roelofs converted a free-position attempt to get the scoring started with 12:47 on the clock, tying the game at 8-8. She won the subsequent draw control and passed the ball ahead to Charlotte Ryan (Tully, N.Y.) who buried the ball in the goal just six seconds later to tie the NCAA record for the fastest goal consecutive goals by the same team and give Navy a 9-8 advantage. Isabelle Thornburg (Alexandria, Va.) and Lola Leone (Bay Shore, N.Y.) continued the scoring with a free-position goals. Roelofs bookended the 5-0 run with her second free-position goal of the run to put Navy in front 12-8, a lead the Midshipmen would not surrender.

"Today was a battle and we are happy to come away with a win," head coach Cindy Timchal said after the game. "The Mount is a tough place to play. They were in the NCAAs last year. They are a veteran team and play with a lot of energy, but we were able to overcome. We were winning draws and creating early offensive opportunities. I think that was huge going into the fourth quarter. Reagan got us back on track and Charlotte played really well, especially in the fourth quarter. We were able to generate shots. Defensively, we had a couple of tough breaks that led to goals, but we were able to overcome. Moving forward, we are excited to host Saint Joseph's at home on Friday."

Offensively, Ryan and Leelee Denton (Nashville, Tenn.) paced the team with three goals apiece. For Ryan, it was her first collegiate hat trick, while it was Denton's fourth hat trick of the 2022 season. Roelofs and Thornburg added two goals apiece, while Kasey Dietzel (Warrington, Pa.), Emily Messinese (Manchester, Md.), and Leone added one each. Roelofs led the team with three assists, while Denton and Dietzel each added two helpers each.

Dietzel and Roelofs combined for 18 of Navy's 22 draw controls on the day. Dietzel finished with a career-high 10, while Roelofs added eight. Christine Fiore (Darien, Conn.) led the team with two caused turnovers, while Denton and Fiore paced the squad with two ground balls apiece. Jo Torres (Prince Frederick, Md.) earned her fourth win of the season at goal. The sophomore registered three saves in the contest to give her 91 stops in her short career.

The Mount was led by Erin Anderson and Zoe Hulburt. The duo finished the game with four and three goals, respectively, while goalkeeper Madison Bradley finished with five saves.

Mount St. Mary's took an early lead with a goal two minutes into the game. Dietzel knotted the game at 1-1 just 90 second later. The Mount regained the lead with just over two minutes to play in the first quarter, but Thornburg responded to tie the game at two before the quarter break.

In the second quarter, Denton gave the Mids their first lead of the game with a goal 30 seconds into the period. She scored her second goal of the afternoon four minutes later to put Navy in front 4-2. The Mount pulled to within one with a goal. On the play, the Mids' goalkeeper was given a green card and had to sit out for a minute of action. The Mountaineers were able to tie the game with the Midshipmen starting goalie on the bench.

The Mount regained the lead with a quick goal to start the third quarter. Navy responded with three consecutive scores to take a two-goal advantage. Ryan opened the scoring for the Midshipmen, tying the score at 5-5. Messinese gave Navy the lead with a free-position score. Denton completed the hat trick with her third goal of the game to put the Mids in front 7-5. The home team used a pair of goals in the final minute of the third quarter to knot the game at 7-7 heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers scored to regain the lead and setting up the Mids' game-winning 5-0 run, which included four free-position goals. With Navy leading 12-8, the Mount cut into the lead with a pair of goals, but Ryan responded to extend the Mids' advantage back to three scores. The home team found the back of the net with five minutes remaining, but solid defense by each team prevented any further scoring and Navy claimed the 13-11 road victory.

Navy returns home to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for a nonconference game with Saint Joseph's on Friday, Feb. 25. Opening draw is slated for 5:00 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will be available.
