Navy Picks Up Wins Over Bradley and Merrimack Wednesday to Conclude Spring Break Schedule

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Navy women's tennis team (16-2) concluded its four-match spring break slate by earning a sweep of its twin bill against Bradley (5-9) and Merrimack (3-5) Wednesday at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando.

The Midshipmen opened the day with a 5-2 victory over the Braves, followed by earning a 7-0 decision against the Warriors to round out action Wednesday. After the pair of victories, Navy now stands with 16 wins through 18 matches this season, tying the second-most victories through 18 matches in program history (2020).

The Mids now have an 83-25 record (.769) on the dual season in singles, along with a 46-5 mark (.902) in double play.

Additionally, after recording a straight-set win in each of Wednesday's matches, Meghana Komarraju (Sr., Vienna, Va.) extended her singles-winning streak to 12-straight matches. The 12-consecutive singles wins by the senior team captain ranks tied for the third-longest such streak in program history. The winning streak ties the longest of Komarraju's career, matching the 12-match win streak compiled she compiled in 2019.

Match One: Navy 5, Bradley 2
In its first match of the day against Bradley, Navy took each of the three doubles competitions, prior to securing victories in four of the six singles matches to earn a three-point win over the Braves, 5-2.

"All of our doubles in the Bradley match came prepared to play and did a good job of setting the tempo of the match," said head coach Keith Puryear. "Bradley did a good job of making runs on several courts, we did a good job of battling, taking some of what we talked about after yesterday's matches and applying them today. One area we must continue to focus on is consistently being able to take advantage of the opportunities that come up in both singles and doubles."

In doubles competition, the Midshipmen opened the match with the pairing of Komarraju and Katreina Corpuz (Sr., Ewa Beach, Hawai'i) downing Bradley's Maria Bezmenova and Nina Marjanovic (6-0). The duo of Kacey Moore (Sr., Wellington, Fla.) and Jillian Taggart (Jr., Fair Oaks, Calif.) secured the doubles point and a 1-0 lead for the Mids just moments later, earning a four-point win over Madalena Andrade and Kirstin Hailey (6-2).

The final doubles match of the competition saw Navy pick up a sweep of the three contests, with Casey Accola (Jr., Winter Garden, Fla.) and Emily Tannenbaum (Fr., Commack, N.Y.) downing Bozana Lojpur and Nicola Perlwitz (6-2).

Following its sweep of the doubles circuit, Navy quickly extended its lead to 2-0 over the Braves with a straight-set win by Komarraju (6-2, 6-2) at the No. 4 position over Bezmenova. Tannenbaum then extended the Mids' advantage to three points with a straight-set victory of her own (6-2, 6-2) over Hailey in the No. 2 singles competition.

Navy clinched the win over Bradley, its 15th of the season, as Moore defeated Andrade in the No. 3 singles match in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) for the fourth and deciding point of the contest. After clinching the win over the Braves, Stella Ribaudo (So., Chicago, Ill.) defeated Marjanovic in the No. 5 singles match (6-4, 6-3) to extend the Midshipmen's lead to 5-0.

The lone victories of the contest for Bradley came at the No. 6 position, a straight-set win by Perlwitz over Accola, and the No. 1 competition as Lojpur downed Taggart in a three-set battle (2-6, 7-6, 10-7).

Match Two: Navy 7, Merrimack 0
In their second match of the day, the Midshipmen won each of the six singles competitions, prior to turning in a dominant effort on the doubles circuit to clinch a 7-0 win and a sweep of Wednesday's doubleheader.

"I thought we did a great job of dealing with the elements," said associate head coach Alessandra Pedergnana. "We came out strong in singles and did a good job of sticking to our game plans in second sets. Parvathi (Shanker) split sets and did a good job of making that extra ball in certain points against her opponent. In doubles, the pairing of Corinne (Farid) and Parvathi (Shanker), along with Sylvia (Eklund) and Kate (Lee) did a great job of being aggressive from the first point.

Kate Lee (Fr., Concord, Calif.) gave the Mids a 1-0 lead in the first decision of the contest, downing the Warriors' Mikaela Campana in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) at the No. 5 position. Closely following the victory by Lee was a win by Corpuz in the No. 2 match, defeating Allyson Nerf (6-2, 6-0) to extend the Navy advantage to 2-0.

Komarraju carried over her strong performance against Bradley to the match against Merrimack, earning a straight-set win in the No. 1 match (6-1, 6-1) over Kristina Calistro to extend the Midshipmen advantage to 3-0.

Navy would clinch the fourth and deciding point, along with its 16th win of the season, as Corrine Farid (So., Columbia, Mo.) earned a straight-set decision over Sophie Thoring (6-1, 6-1) in the No. 6 singles match. Following the clinching point by Faird, Sylvia Eklund (Fr., Bellevue, Wash.) won the No. 3 contest against Dzhastina Mikhnova (6-2, 6-4).

The final singles win of the day for the Mids came at the No. 4 position as Parvathi Shanker (Fr., Napa, Calif.) defeated Rosemary Campanella in a three-set match (6-1, 3-6, 10-7).

In doubles, the Mids picked up where they left off during singles competition, as Farid and Shanker combined to defeat Campanella and Mikhnova at the No. 2 position (6-0), prior to a win by Eklund and Lee in the No. 3 match (6-0) that secured the doubles point and a 7-0 victory for Navy over Merrimack.

The Warriors earned their lone victory of the competition in the No. 1 doubles contest, as Calistro and Nerf defeated Corpuz and Komarraju (7-6).

"Overall, I'm pleased at how all competed," Pedergnana continued. "We were led by Meghana (Komarraju) and Katreina (Corpuz) in singles. They lost a tough doubles match but left it all out there. We must continue to focus on the areas we have been discussing as a team, but we are definitely on the right track. I look forward to what is to come."
