Box Score LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Navy baseball team (7-10, 0-2 Patriot League) fell in a 7-2 decision to Bucknell (5-9, 2-0 Patriot League) in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, prior to the second game of the twin bill being suspended due to thunderstorms in the Lewisburg area. The contest will be resumed at noon on Sunday, prior to the start of the fourth and final game of the series between the Bison and Mids.
Christian Policelli (Sr., Walkersville, Md.) led Navy at the plate in game one, going 2-for-4, in addition to being 1-for-2 through his first two at-bats of game two. Having recorded hits in both of Saturday's contests, Policelli extended his current hitting streak to six-straight games, in addition to having multi-hit efforts in four of his last six contests.
Joe Simourian (Sr., Andover, Mass.) posted a 1-for-3 showing in game one, including a game-tying RBI double, while
Ivan Aguirre (Fr., Temple City, Calif.) went a combined 4-for-5 on Saturday, including being 2-for-2 in the suspended second game.
On the mound,
Matthew Shirah (So., Blue Ridge, Ga.) took his second loss of the season in game one, allowing five runs on seven hits over 3.1 innings of work. In relief of Shirah,
Nolan Jorgenson (So., Eastvale, Calif.) pitched the remaining 2.2 innings, yielding two runs on six hits.
Liam Golden (Fr., Springfield, Va.) earned the start in game two for Navy, allowing three runs on six hits over four innings of work. Prior to the suspension of the contest, Golden retired nine of the final 11 batters he faced, one via strikeout.
"Kind of an odd day in the sense of the doubleheader not being completed," said head coach
Paul Kostacopoulos. "Basically, we just have to keep working to break through, we are doing some things better. It's a game-by-game thing at this point, baseball has its way of straightening things out. It also has a way of keeping things like this going. We just have to keep working to get out of this slide, we have to keep working our way through it."
Game One: Bucknell 7, Navy 2 (Seven Innings)
In the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader against Bucknell, the Midshipmen erased a 2-1, fourth-inning deficit with one run on three hits, highlighted by a go-ahead RBI double by Simourian, to tie the score at 2-2.
However, the Bison offense responded to the Mids' rally with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame, forcing Shirah (1-2) from the contest in favor of Jorgenson. Bucknell added another two runs on three hits in the sixth that ultimately secured its 7-2 victory over Navy.
The Mids were not without opportunity in the contest, stranding seven runners on base, including a leaving two runners on in both the third and fourth inning. Policelli and Aguirre paced the Navy offense with their aforementioned multi-hit efforts, while
Eduardo Diaz (So., Miami, Fla.) and
Zach Stevens (Sr., Lexington, Mass.) each went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Bucknell starting pitcher Austin Odell (2-2) turned in a stellar outing in Saturday's opener, posting a complete-game, two-run effort that included striking out four batters. Anthony Sherwin and Chris Cannizzaro led the way for the Bison on offense, tallying a run scored, three hits and three RBI apiece.
Game Two: Bucknell 3, Navy 0 (Suspended in the Fifth Inning)
In game two of the Patriot League doubleheader, the Bucknell offense continued its hot hitting with three runs on four hits against Golden to take a 3-0 lead over Navy in the first.
However, Golden rebounded following the three-run first, retiring nine of the final 11 batters he faced to maintain the Mids' three-run deficit. However, Golden was matched by Bucknell's game two starter, Ben Magovern, who tallied five shutout innings while allowing just four hits.
Prior to the suspension of the contest, the Mids used back-to-back, two-out singles by Aguirre and
Nick Burch (Jr., Hollywood, Md.) to produce their first threat of the afternoon against Magovern. However, the Bison left-hander was able to work out of the frame without allowing a run, holding the Bucknell advantage at three runs.
Entering the bottom of the fifth, thunderstorms rolled into the Lewisburg area, forcing the contest to be suspended to Sunday.
