#17 Women’s Lacrosse Steps Out of Conference to Host Georgetown

Opening draw between the Midshipmen and Hoyas is slated for 5:00 p.m.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 17 Navy women's lacrosse team (7-1) hosts Georgetown (4-4) in a nonconference game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available.
 
Scouting the Midshipmen
No. 17 Navy enters the week 7-1 on the season, including a 6-1 mark in nonconference games. The Midshipmen have won three consecutive games, defeating No. 15 Drexel (W, 13-6), No. 16 Johns Hopkins (W, 13-12 ot), and Bucknell (W, 15-3).
 
Offensively, Navy has tallied 161 points on 111 goals and 50 assists in eight games. The Mids have had a balanced attack so far this season. Of the 16 players who have scored points, eight have been upperclassmen (juniors / seniors) and eight have been underclassmen (freshmen / sophomores). Through eight games, the upperclassmen have registered 58 goals, accounting for 52.3% of the goals scored, while the underclassmen have tallied 53 scores. The upperclassmen have accounted for 57.1% of the points scored with 68.0% of the team's assists.
 
The Mids are led by Reagan Roelofs (Apple Valley, Minn.), Kasey Dietzel (Warrington, Pa.), Leelee Denton (Nashville, Tenn.), Charlotte Ryan (Tully, N.Y.), Gil Eby (Towson, Md.), Lindsay Beardmore (Annapolis, Md.), and Lola Leone (Bay Shore, N.Y.).
 
Roelofs paces the offense with a team-high 24 points on 16 goals and eight assists. Dietzel leads the team with 12 assists, while adding 10 goals for 22 total points. Denton is third on the team with 21 points on a team-high 17 goals with four assists. Ryan (14g 3a) and Eby (12g 5a) are tied for fourth on the team with 17 points apiece. Beardmore (11g 5a) and Leone (11g 3a) round out Navy's double-figure scorers with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
 
The Mids picked up 155 ground balls, won 121 draw controls, caused 56 turnovers, and tallied 71 saves.
 
Roelofs leads the team with 40 draw controls, while Dietzel is second with 33. Christine Fiore (Darian, Conn.) has grabbed a team-high 18 ground balls, while Grace Loughery (Perkasie, Pa.) has added 17. Eby, Dietzel, Alexis Bell (Johns Creek, Ga.), and Jo Torres (Prince Frederick, Md.) have added double-digit ground balls as well. Bell and Loughery lead the team with eight caused turnovers, while Erin Carson (New Albany, Ohio) has added six CT.
 
Torres leads the team with 60 of Navy's 71 saves in just under 415 minutes of action. Torres has earned six victories with a 51.7 save percentage. She is joined by Emma Richardell (Bethesda, Md.) who picked up her first collegiate victory over No. 16 Johns Hopkins. Richardell has 11 stops in just over 60 minutes of action.
 
Scouting the Opponent
Georgetown enters the week 4-4 overall. The Hoyas have won two of their last three games, including victories over common opponents George Washington (W, 19-3) and George Mason (W, 21-5). However, Georgetown dropped its most recent contest to Penn (L, 10-7).
 
This season, the Hoyas have amassed 148 points on 115 goals and 33 assists in eight games. Georgetown has won 135 draw controls with 100 ground balls and 71 caused turnovers. Hoyas' goalies have combined for 57 saves in eight contests with 81 goals allowed with a 41.3 save percentage and a 10.13 goals against average.
 
Earlier this week, senior Ali Diamond was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her performances against George Mason and Penn as announced by the league office. Diamond was able to record team-high six points off four goals and two assists in a 1-1 week. She also tallied a team-high four points on three goals and one assist in Saturday's win over George Mason. Diamond has started in all eight games for the Blue & Gray and is currently pacing the Hoyas across the board in offensive statistics with 15 goals, eight assists and 23 points.
 
All-Time Series
The game marks the second meeting between the two teams in women's lacrosse. Navy holds a 1-0 (1.000) overall record against Georgetown. The game marks the first meeting between the two teams in Annapolis.
 
Navy posted a 16-9 victory over Georgetown in the inaugural meeting on April 10, 2019. Kelly Larkin ('20) tallied 10 points on the night on four goals and six assists to pace the offensive attack. With her 10 points, Larkin became the fourth player in Navy history to record 300 or more points in a career.
 
Head coach Cindy Timchal is 14-4 (.778) all-time against Georgetown.
 
National Rankings
The Navy women's lacrosse team remained at No. 17 in the ILWomen / IWLCA Division I Poll this week. The Mids have been ranked three times this season and 66 total weeks in program history, including a streak of 47 consecutive weeks from the final poll of the 2017 season (May 30, 2017) to April 12, 2021. In addition to ranking in the ILWomen / IWLCA Division I Poll, the Mids are ranked No. 14 according to US Lacrosse Magazine.
 
Loughery Named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week
The Patriot League announced its weekly women's lacrosse award winners and Navy senior Grace Loughery (Perkasie, Pa.) was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week. Loughery helped lead Navy to a 15-3 victory over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon to open Patriot League play.
 
The senior anchored the Navy defense that held Bucknell to just three goals in the game, leading the team with two caused turnovers and five ground balls. Loughery and the Navy defense kept the Bison scoreless for the first quarter and the first 23-plus minutes of the game, allowing just one goal in the second, third, and fourth quarters. In addition, Loughery had a hand in limiting the Bison's top five leading goal scorers to just two goals combined.
 
Last Time Out: #17 Navy 15, Bucknell 3 (March 19, 2022)
The No. 17 Navy women's lacrosse team posted a 15-3 victory over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Midshipmen opened the game with a 9-0 run and never looked back en route to the 12-goal victory.
 
Offensively, the Mids tallied 24 points on 15 goals and nine assists. Nine different Midshipmen scored goals on the afternoon, including five athletes who posted multiple goals.
 
Reagan Roelofs (Apple Valley, Minn.) scored a career high six points, finishing the day with a team-high three goals and three assists. Lindsay Beardmore (Annapolis, Md.), Kasey Dietzel (Warrington, Pa.), Bobbie Haney (Woodbine, Md.), and Gil Eby (Towson, Md.) each added two scores apiece, while Leelee Denton (Nashville, Tenn.), Tori DiCarlo (Rosemont, Pa.), Lola Leone (Bay Shore, N.Y.), and Charlotte Ryan (Tully, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring with a goal each.
 
Roelofs led the team with three assists, while Ryan added a pair of helpers. Beardmore, Dietzel, Isabelle Thornburg (Alexandria, Va.), and Jade Torres (Prince Frederick, Md.) contributed an assist apiece.
 
Defensively, Navy used three goalies to record nine saves, limiting the Bucknell offense to just three goals. The Mids caused five turnovers, while picking up 17 ground balls.
 
Jo Torres (Prince Frederick, Md.) earned the start at goal. The sophomore worked 43 minutes, allowing a goal with six saves. Emma Richardell (Bethesda, Md.) surrendered a goal, while notching three stops in 15 minutes of action. Anne Culicerto (Charlotte, N.C.) closed out the game, working the final two minutes of action with one goal allowed.
 
Grace Loughery (Perkasie, Pa.) led the team with two caused turnovers and five ground balls, while Eby picked up an additional four ground balls and Erin Finley (Downingtown, Pa.) added a pair.
 
Dietzel and Roelofs paced the team with five draw controls apiece, combining to win 10 of Navy's 12 draws on the day.
