Mids Primed to Open Patriot League Play Against Lehigh and Bucknell

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's tennis team (16-3, 0-0 Patriot League) will open Patriot League play over the weekend as it welcomes Lehigh (4-4, 1-0 Patriot League) and Bucknell (9-5, 0-0 Patriot League) to the Tose Family Tennis Center.
 
The Mids are set to take on the Mountain Hawks at 1 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a tilt at 12:30 p.m. against the Bison on Sunday. Free, live statistics of both matches will be available via NavySports.com.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES
Over 13 all-time meetings against Lehigh, Navy has totaled a perfect 13-0 mark that includes six wins in Annapolis. In the last contest between the two programs in April of 2021, the Midshipmen rolled to a 6-1 victory over the Mountain Hawks. Navy has found similar success against Bucknell, having a 14-2 mark over 16 all-time matches. The Mids have won each of their seven home matches against the Bison, in addition to winning each of the last 14 contests in the series.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Navy was last in action on Thursday, dropping a 5-2 decision to No. 30 Old Dominion. The loss snapped a two-match win streak for the Midshipmen, along with the decision being their first home defeat of the dual season. The two victories on the day for Navy came in singles, with Kacey Moore (Sr., Wellington, Fla.) and Stella Ribaudo (So., Chicago, Ill.) earning wins at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions, respectively.

SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMEN
LEADING THE CHARGE: Team captain Meghana Komarraju (Sr., Viena, Va.) and newcomer Emily Tannenbaum (Fr., Commack, N.Y.) have 19 wins apiece in singles to lead the way for the Midshipmen. Prior to a loss on Thursday, Komarraju had won each of her last 12 matches in singles, tying the third-longest such streak in program history. Tannenbaum, who has a 9-4 mark this dual season on the singles circuit, has totaled a 6-4 record over her last 10 singles matches. Rounding out the top performers for the Mids in singles competition is the duo of Moore and Ribaudo, who have each totaled 17 victories.
 
TOP-TANDEMS: The doubles team of Komarraju and Katreina Corpuz (Sr., Ewa Beach, Hawai'i) leads the way for the Mids with a 15-7 record, including an 8-2 mark in their last 10 matches. The pairing of Moore and Jillian Taggart (Jr., Fair Oaks, Calif.) ranks second behind Corpuz and Komarraju with 10 wins on the doubles circuit, including a 7-3 mark on the dual season.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE PLAY: Since its first season as a varsity program in 2010, Navy has a 43-11 record (.796) in regular-season Patriot League matches, along with having a 17-11 all-time record in the Patriot League Tournament. Last season, the Midshipmen reached the Patriot League Tournament Championship match for the seventh time in program history, dropping a narrow decision to Boston University, 4-3.
 
WINNING WAYS: Despite its loss to the nationally-ranked Monarchs on Thursday, Navy enters Patriot League play with an outstanding record of 48-9 (.842) on the dual season in singles, along with totaling an equally impressive 46-7 mark (.868) in doubles this spring. Individually, Tannenbaum has 37 combined victories between doubles and singles this season, just two wins shy of tying Moore (2019) Annalise Klopfer (2019) for the sixth-most combined victories for a single season in program history.
 
BOUNCE BACK: Following a loss this season, the Midshipmen have found success in bouncing back. Navy posted a seven-match win streak following its first loss of the season against Delaware, followed by a two-match win streak after its second loss of the season against Harvard. In matches directly following a loss this season, the Mids are outscoring opponents by 10 points at 12-2.
 
MILESTONES AHEAD: Navy head coach Keith Puryear enters play against Lehigh on Saturday just one-win shy of 250 for his career at the helm of the Midshipmen women's tennis program. Additionally, Puryear sits just eight wins away from 700 for his career as a head coach. Now in his 17th season at Navy, Puryear spent the previous 19 years as the head coach of the UMBC men's tennis team, along with spending 17 seasons at the helm of the Retriever women's tennis program.
 
RECORD-BOOK CHECK: Following her win in singles over Old Dominion last time out, Moore now has the fifth-most singles victories in program history with 65. Emani Decquir (2009-13) has the fourth-most career wins in program history (68), while Darien Sears (2010-14) is third with 78 wins. Erin Snook (2010-14) holds the all-time record for career-singles victories in program history with 90.
 
HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS: The Mids will return to action over the weekend seeking a bounce back following their first home loss of the season. Navy's 12-match home win streak ends as the longest such streak to open a season in program history, along with being its second-longest home win streak overall.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN HAWKS
LAST TIME OUT: Last time out, Lehigh earned a 5-2 victory over Loyola in its Patriot League opener. The Mountain Hawks quickly earned the doubles point against the Greyhounds, taking the first two matches to go up 1-0. In singles, Lehigh continued to push the pace, winning four-straight singles match to secure the road victory over Loyola.
 
LEADING THE CHARGE: In singles competition this dual season, Hamsa Javagal has totaled a team-leading six wins for the Mountain Hawks, three of which have come at the No. 1 position. The duo of Anushka Dania and Megha Dania are tied for second in singles wins with five apiece. Megha Dania has totaled four wins at the No. 3 position, while four of Anushka Dania's wins have come at the No. 4 spot.
 
TOP-TANDEMS: The top-doubles team for Lehigh this spring has been the pairing of Anushka and Megha Dania, who have recorded a 7-2 mark at the No. 2 position. Junmoke James and Hamsa Javagal have played all nine matches at the No. 1 spot for the Mountain Hawks, posting a 4-5 record.

SCOUTING THE BISON
LAST TIME OUT: Last time out, Bucknell dropped a pair of 7-0 decisions to Hawai'i, with both contests being played in Manoa. The pair of defeats marked the first time this season that the Bison had been swept. Prior to its matches against the 73rd-ranked Rainbow Warriors, Bucknell picked up a 4-0 victory over Chaminade during its swing through Hawai'i.
 
LEADING THE CHARGE: Leading the way in singles play for the Bison in singles play this season is Whitney King, who is 16-3 overall on the singles circuit. King, who has played 10 singles matches this dual season, has an 8-2 mark from the No. 2 position. Anna Lajos ranks second on the team in singles wins with 15, eight of which have come at the No. 5 spot this dual season.
 
TOP-TANDEMS: The top-doubles team this season for Bucknell is the pairing of King and Daniela Bellini, who have a record of 17-3 that includes a 9-2 mark this dual season. The pairing has secured all nine of their wins this spring at the No. 1 position, in addition to have an 8-2 mark over their last 10 matches. Lajos and Madi Sebulsky rank second on the team in doubles wins with seven, all of which have come at the No. 3 spot this dual season.
 
UP NEXT
Following its league-opening matches against Lehigh and Bucknell, Navy is slated to return to action April 2 for its annual Star match against rival Army. The contest, hosted in Annapolis, is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
