Women’s Tennis Primed for Pivotal Patriot League Match at Boston University Saturday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's tennis team (21-4, 4-0 Patriot League) is scheduled to return to play 1 p.m. Saturday as it travels to take on Boston University (11-7, 4-0 Patriot League) in a pivotal Patriot League match. The contest, which will serve as the regular-season finale for both programs, will decide who earns the top seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES vs. BOSTON U.
In a series that dates back to the 2015 season, the Midshipmen and Terriers have met a total of nine times. BU has won all nine of those meetings, despite five of the last six contests being decided by two points or less. The two teams last met in the 2021 Patriot League Tournament Finals, with Boston U. picking up a narrow victory over the Mids, 4-3.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Last time out, Navy remained perfect in Patriot League play with a 6-1 victory over Loyola in Baltimore. The Midshipmen swept the doubles competition, prior to taking five of the six singles contests to secure the five-point win. Emily Tannenbaum (Fr., Commack, N.Y.) highlighted the effort of the Mids against the Greyhounds, teaming up with Casey Accola (Jr., Winter Garden, Fla.) to earn victory at the No. 3 doubles, prior to picking up a straight-set win at the No. 2 singles over Lauren Manwiller (6-1, 6-0).

SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMEN
LEADING THE CHARGE: Tannenbaum leads the way for Navy in singles play this season, boasting a record of 23-11 that includes a 13-5 mark in dual matches. Three of the freshman's victories have come at the No. 1 position, while eight have been secured in No. 2 matches. Meghana Komarraju (Sr., Vienna, Va.) and Kacey Moore (Sr., Wellington, Fla.) are tied for the second-most singles wins on the team with 22, while Stella Ribaudo (So., Chicago, Ill.) enters the weekend with 19 victories in singles play.
 
TOP-TANDEMS: In doubles, the pairing of Komarraju and Katreina Corpuz (Sr., Ewa Beach, Hawai'i) have gone wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team for the Midshipmen. The senior duo has combined for 18 wins on the doubles circuit, including an outstanding 11-3 mark in dual matches. At the No. 1 position, Corpuz and Komarraju have a 5-1 mark, followed by another five wins from the No. 2 spot. Moore and Jillian Taggart (Jr., Fair Oaks, Calif.) enter play against BU with a 12-5 record on the season, including a 9-4 mark in dual action. Accola and Tannenbaum have the longest win streak amongst doubles teams for the Mids, earning victories in each of their last seven matches.
 
RECORD BOOK CHECK: With her singles victory at the Loyola last time out, Moore moved into sole possession of fourth place on the Navy all-time singles victories list. The senior has a career record of 70-29 in singles, equaling a .707-win percentage, the 10th-best percentage for a career in program history. Additionally, Moore enters the weekend with 119 combined wins between doubles and singles, the sixth-most combined victories in team history. Komarraju trails Moore by just two victories in the combined win rankings, having the seventh most in team history at 117.
 
WINNING WAYS: The Midshipmen have posted a dominant effort in both doubles and singles this spring, having a combined 108-39 record in singles and a 59-10 record in doubles. Navy has lost the doubles point just three times this season, en route to its .855-win percentage on the circuit. In total this season, including tournament play, the Mids sit just one win shy of 200 in singles competition and five wins away from 100 doubles victories.
 
CHASING 700: With Navy's victory over Loyola on Wednesday, head coach Keith Puryear is just three wins away from 700 in his career. Puryear would join Georgia's Jeff Wallace and North Carolina's Brian Kalbas as the only active women's tennis coaches to have 700 victories in their career.
 
POSTSEASON PICTURE: With one regular-season match remaining, Navy is tied with Boston University atop the Patriot League standings with a 4-0 record in league matches. Saturday's match will play a pivotal role in deciding seeding for the upcoming league tournament, which is scheduled to be held April 21-24 at the Ulrich Varsity Tennis Courts in Bethlehem, Pa.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE PLAY: Under the direction of Puryear and associate head coach Alessandra Pedergnana, the Midshipmen have found great success in regular-season Patriot League matches. Navy has a combined record of 47-11 over its 13 seasons as a member of the Patriot League. The Mids also have a winning record in Patriot League Tournament matches over that span at 17-11.

SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
LAST TIME OUT: Last time out, Boston U. earned a 4-2 road victory over Army to remain perfect in Patriot League action. The Terriers won the top-two doubles matches for the first point and then captured three singles points, including two in three-set battles, to extend their win streak to six-straight contests.
 
LEADING THE CHARGE: In singles competition this season, Victoria Carlsten has seen the most action for the Terriers at the No. 1 position. The sophomore has a 7-3 record in No. 1 matches to highlight a 12-12 mark overall. Erica Di Battista is second for BU in singles wins this season (14), including a 5-3 record at the No. 2 singles. Rounding out the top-three singles performers for Boston U. this season is Shelly Yaloz, who leads the team with 15 singles victories this season. The senior has primarily played at the No. 5 singles, posting a 6-2 record that includes a 6-1 mark over her last seven matches.
 
TOP-TANDEMS: In doubles competition, the duo of Yaloz and Kaitlin Tan lead the way for the Terriers with a 14-2 record. The pairing has teamed up to win four contests at the No. 1 position, along with another eight at the No. 2 doubles. Overall, Yaloz and Tan have won eight-straight matches, along with posting a 9-1 record over their last 10 doubles competitions. Di Battista and Emily Kim rank second for BU in doubles wins this season, having an 8-7 record that includes a 6-5 mark at the No. 1 doubles.
 
UP NEXT
Following its match against Boston University, Navy will await the official announcement of its seeding for the Patriot League Tournament. The league tournament will begin with round one on Thursday, April 21, followed by the quarterfinal round on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday and the championship match on Sunday.
