ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy lightweight team will set out Saturday morning on the Severn River for its penultimate regular season meet. The Haines Trophy and the Paulovich Team Points Trophy will be up for grabs over a five-race slate between No. 3 Navy, No. 9 Harvard and Delaware. The third varsity eight crews will kick off the action at 7:30 a.m. and wrap up at 8:50 a.m. with a varsity four contest.
The entire race schedule for Saturday will consist of the third varsity eight crews heading down the 2,000-meter course on the Severn River at 7:30 a.m. followed 20 minutes later by the Navy, Harvard and Delaware lightweights of the second varsity competing at 7:50. The Haines Trophy contest between Navy and Harvard (Delaware is a guest), is slated for a 8:10 a.m. start before the final eights race at 8:30 a.m. between the fourth and fifth varsity crews. A small boat showdown will conclude the racing as the varsity four crews will take to the water at 8:50 a.m.
The teams will be racing on the lower course on Saturday morning. The finish line is best seen from the fields on Hospital Point. Spectators are asked to refrain from entering Hubbard Hall before, during or following the action.
Most Recent Navy-Harvard Matchup: April 20, 2019
In a matchup of two top-seven teams, the seventh-ranked Navy lightweight crew team found itself in a nip-and-tuck battle with the fourth-ranked Harvard Crimson across a slate of five races on Saturday morning on the Charles River. Racing alongside the University of Delaware, Harvard and Navy went one-two in all of the competitions from fifth varsity all the way up to first varsity with three of those races decided by 1.9 seconds or less. Unfortunately, for the visiting Mids, the Crimson were able to retain the Haines Trophy in a hard-fought first varsity eight race.
In that V8 contest, the Crimson jumped out to an early lead and were up by around four seats at the 1,000-meter mark. Realizing that Harvard was beginning to pull away, Navy started its comeback attempt and nearly pulled even within the next 500 meters. Down the stretch, both crews were going stroke-for-stroke before Harvard edged ahead late for a 1.184-second victory at 6:20.380 to 6:21.564. Delaware posted a time of 6:27.582.
What's at Stake
Haines Trophy
Named after Bert Haines, the Harvard lightweight head coach from 1936 to 1952, the trophy is awarded to the winner of the first varsity eight race between Navy and Harvard. Raced for since 1964, the Crimson hold the series lead, 45-8 with the Mids earning ahold of the trophy most recently in 2016.
Michael Paulovich Points Trophy
Introduced into the Navy-Harvard rivalry in 2018, the Paulovich Trophy goes to the highest-scoring program. Michael Paulovich was a four-year member of the Harvard lightweight program before entering the United States Marine Corps in 1979. A strong supporter of both Harvard and Navy, he served until 2007. Harvard has earned the trophy in 2018 and 2019.
Last Time Out: April 9 vs. Columbia & Georgetown
The No. 2 Navy lightweight rowing team had a standout day of competition on Saturday with a clean sweep of seven combined races versus No. 5 Georgetown and No. 7 Columbia at Overpeck Park. Taking on the Lions in a series of four races in the morning and the Hoyas in three more in the afternoon, the Mids collected seven wins with each victory coming by two or more seconds. Navy will return to Hubbard Hall with a pair of trophies as the program's first varsity defeated Columbia for the WIT Cup and Georgetown for the Forster Cup.
