Heavyweight Crew to Wrap Up Regular Season with Quad Meet in N.J.

Navy to race versus Columbia, G.W. and Hobart in West Windsor

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy heavyweight rowing team is scheduled to wrap up its 2022 regular season campaign on Sunday as part of a four-team competition at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. Looking to finish the regular season strong before turning their attention to the Eastern Sprints in mid-May and the IRA National Championship in early June, the No. 13 Mids (5-6) will go up against No. 17 Columbia (5-3), R/V Hobart (7-4) and George Washington (0-0) in a series of four races beginning at 12-noon on Sunday.

In preparation for the postseason, the teams will kick off the action on Mercer Lake with a varsity fours contest at noon before the eight-man crews hit the water 20 minutes later with a novice/fifth varsity eight race. Navy's second and third varsity eight crews are both entered race in the 12:40 p.m. 2V8 competition. The Stevenson Cup will be on the line between Navy and Columbia in the final race at 1:00 p.m. with Hobart and George Washington racing as guests.

Most Recent Stevenson Cup Competition: May 5, 2019 in West Windsor, N.J.
The Navy heavyweight crew program closed its regular season in spectacular fashion as the 11th-ranked Mids swept a four-race slate at Mercer Lake on May 5, 2019 over No. 14 Columbia, No. 20 George Washington and No. 22 Hobart College. In the first varsity trophy race, Navy knocked off Columbia to retain the Stevenson Cup for the second consecutive season.

In the headlining first varsity eight event, Navy was the class of the field with a 6:06.4 result. The Mids finished 2.8 seconds ahead of the Colonials and Lions, who crossed the line in a dead heat at 6:09.2. After a video review, George Washington earned the second place standing by approximately three feet. The Hobart Statesmen were fourth with a 6:13.5 time.

What's at Stake
Stevenson Trophy
First presented in 1950 to winner of the first varsity race between Navy and Columbia and named in honor of Maxwell Stevenson, an early chairman of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association, the Mids hold a substantial, 27-6 lead in overall wins.

Last Time Out: April 23 vs. Harvard & Penn
Racing as one of three ranked teams on the Charles River last Saturday morning, the No. 14 Navy heavyweight squad was challenged throughout a five-race slate by No. 5 Harvard and No. 15 Penn. At the completion of the action, the Mids were victorious in the fifth varsity contest and came in runner-up in three other races.

The Adams Cup contest between the first varsity crews from Navy, Harvard and Penn was competitive over the opening 1,500 meters before the host Crimson pulled away from the Mids over the final quarter of the race for a seven-second margin of victory at 5:49.8 to 5:56.8. Navy nearly held that same margin over Penn as the Quakers were 6.3 seconds back at 6:03.1.
