Navy Plays Host to Loyola Saturday in Pivotal Patriot League Contest

Setting the Stage
• Inside the Game:
After having its three-game winning streak snapped a week ago against No. 14 Boston University, Navy (6-4, 2-2 Patriot League) will look to bounce back when it plays host to Loyola (4-5, 3-1 Patriot League) in a nationally-televised contest Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Faceoff is slated for 1:00 pm. The Mids are led by Joe Amplo, who owns a 15-9 record in three seasons at the helm of the Navy program, while Charley Toomey has posted a 164-82 record in 17 seasons as the Greyhounds' head coach.
• Follow the Action: Saturday's contest, presented by Navy Mutual, will be televised by CBS Sports Network with Jason Knapp and Steve Panarelli on the call. Additionally, the game will be carried live on 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV with Pete Medhurst and Joe Miller on the call. Radio coverage begins at 12:45 pm with the Navy Lacrosse Pregame Show. Live stats will also be available on NavyStats.com(.)

Game Day Storylines
• 24 Games and Counting:
Navy's Patrick Skalniak (Jr / M) enters Saturday's contest against Loyola boasting a 24-game point-scoring streak. Skalniak, Navy's leading scorer this season with 37 points (21-16), has amassed 71 points on 38 goals and 33 assists during the streak which dates back to his first-collegiate game on Feb. 7, 2020 against Manhattan. Maryland's Logan Wisnauskas owns the nation's longest point-scoring streak at 66-consecutive games (every game of his career).
• 30-Point Midfielders: Patrick Skalniak (Jr) became the program's 17th different midfielder to reach 30 points in a season when he contributed 6 points (3G, 3A) in the Mids' 11-10 win at Johns Hopkins (3.18). Skalniak is tied for seventh on the Mids' single-season scoring chart by midfielders with a team-high 37 points (21-16). He is just 3 points shy of becoming only the fifth midfielder in school history to register 40 or more points in a season - 44 by Bob DeSimone (1975), 48 by Ryan Wade (2019), 53 by Glen Miles (1986) and 53 by Brian Keith (1989). Dane Swanson (So), meanwhile, needs just 5 points to join Skalniak on the 30-point midfielder list.
• Tolker Eyes Freshman Top-10 Lists: Henry Tolker (Fr / A) is on the verge of joining the ranks of some of the best rookies in program history. A starter in 9 of the 10 games this season, he has amassed 23 points on 17 goals and 6 assists. Tolker needs 7 points to become only the 14th freshman in Navy history to reach 30 points. Meanwhile, he is 5 goals shy of reaching the top 10 in goals by a freshman and 4 assists shy of joining that list, as well.

Program Ties
• Long-time friends Joe Amplo and Charley Toomey both serve as assistant coaches for the US National Team, however, the two will square off on opposite sidelines on Saturday. The two first met as opposing head coaches on April 3, 2021, when Loyola traveled to Annapolis to play the Mids. Navy and Loyola faced each other three times last season, splitting the regular-season contests while Loyola beat Navy in the Patriot League Tournament.
• The two coaches along with fellow assistant coach Seth Tierney collaborated with US National Team head coach John Danowski to raise money and help support their local community's frontline workers during the early stages of the pandemic in 2020. Amplo and Toomey partnered with Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Danowski worked with the Duke University Medical Center in Durham and Tierney connected with Northwell Health on Long Island. The coaches joined forces with local restaurants to provide meals to healthcare workers, while Amplo and Toomey made Easter baskets for the employees to give to their families.
• Charley Toomey served as the Naval Academy Prep School head coach during the 1993 season before joining the Navy coaching staff as an assistant for two years. He served under Bryan Matthews (1994) and Richie Meade (1995).

Scouting Loyola
• Seventeenth-year Loyola head coach Charley Toomey has guided the Greyhounds to a 4-5 record, including a 3-1 mark in the Patriot League this season.
• Since opening the season 0-4, Loyola has won 4 of its last 5 including a 12-10 decision over then-ranked No. 9 Duke. The Greyhounds own conference wins over Lafayette (14-12), Bucknell (13-9) and Holy Cross (16-8), while their only blemish came at the hands of Army (14-12).
• Loyola ranks 36th nationally and 5th in the Patriot League in scoring offense, averaging 11.67 goals per game. Leading the way for the Greyhounds is Aidan Olmstead (Gr / A) who owns 33 points on 14 goals and 19 assists. Joey Kamish (Jr / A) and Kevin Lindley (Gr / A) are separated by just a point with Kamish posting 23 points on 16 goals and 7 assists, while Lindley has 22 points on a team-best 20 goals and 2 assists. Lindley has 3 of the top-25 season goal totals in Loyola history - 37 in 2018, 60 in 2019 and 42 in 2021 - and is the school's career goals scored leader.
• The Greyhounds are ranked 40th nationally and 7th in the league in scoring defense, giving up 12.00 goals per game. Sam Shafer (Gr / GK) has started 7 of the 8 games in which he has played between the pipes. He owns an 11.53 goals-against average and a 46.0 save percentage. Colton Teitelbaum (Jr) and Luke Staudt (So) have also started games this season for Loyola.
• Payton Rezanka (Sr / SSDM) leads the team with 22 caused turnovers, while Cam Wyers (Sr / D) and Matt Hughes (Gr / D) have 12 takeaways apiece. As a team, Loyola is ranked #5 nationally in caused turnovers per game.
• Bailey Savio (Gr / FO) has taken 205 of the 245 draws for Loyola. He owns a 53.7 winning percentage (110-205) and leads the team with 70 ground balls. Savio is the Patriot League and Loyola career record-holder in both faceoffs won and ground balls.

Navy vs. Loyola - The Series
• Loyola and Navy are meeting for the 16th time overall and the 10th since Loyola joined the Patriot League in 2014. The two teams met three times a year ago, splitting the regular-season games while Loyola defeated the Mids in the Patriot League Tournament.
• Loyola owns a 10-5 series advantage, winning 10 of the last 12 meetings. Navy's 14-12 win over the Greyhounds last April marked just the second win over Loyola since 1943 and only the second since it joined the league. The April 17 win also marked the first by Navy on Loyola's home field.
• Saturday's contest will be the 10th game in the series played in Annapolis with the Greyhounds leading 5-4.
• The two programs first met on May 6, 1939, with Navy posting a 14-4 victory. The Mids also took wins over Loyola in 1942 (12-8) and 1943 (8-1). However, the two teams would not meet again until the NCAA Tournament in 1993. The Greyhounds dealt the Mids a 19-8 to end their season.
• The series was rekindled in 2010 with Loyola scoring an 8-7 decision in overtime and a year later the Greyhounds earned a 9-8 come-from-behind win over the Mids in Baltimore.

Skalniak Added to Tewaaraton Award Watch List

The first round of additions (14 players) were announced on March 10 with 13 additional names released on Friday.  The field will be narrowed to 25 nominees on April 21 and the 5 finalists will be announced in early May and invited to the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C. set for June 2.
