After Navy's
Jon Jarosz (So / A / Gambrills, Md.) scored the opening goal of the game (12:59), Kevin Lindley's goal two-and-a-half minutes later sparked a 10-0 run by Loyola that spilled into the second quarter as the Greyhounds (5-5, 4-1 Patriot League) posted an 18-7 victory over the Navy men's lacrosse team (6-5, 2-3 PL) Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
"There's no secret those guys kicked our tails in today from start to finish," said third-year Navy head coach
Joe Amplo. "It was a good old-fashioned butt whooping by Loyola. They have found their stride and we haven't. We have regressed the past couple of weeks in our performance. I still think there is a better performance out there for this group. I know there is. I'm hopeful that our seniors can pull it out of our guys."
Seven different players scored for the Greyhounds during the run that saw them open up a 10-1 lead less that four minutes into the second quarter.
"We couldn't do anything to stop them," added Amplo in regards to the 10-0 run by Loyola. "Their faceoff guy was in control and offensively they are shooting terrific. That was one of the better performances we have seen (this year). I thought if it wasn't for Pat (Ryan), quite honestly, it would have been worse than that. I actually though Pat played pretty well and made some pretty good saves and gave us a chance.
"They're a really good team. They played like fifth and sixth-year seniors. It's a meaningful game in April and they showed up to play. What I saw was a really good team against a team that is not very good right now and that's got to play better."
Second-line midfielder
Sam Dracobly (Jr / Seattle, Wash.) broke a near 19-minute drought by the Mids when he slipped under his defender and punched in his fourth goal of the 2022 campaign. Loyola, meanwhile, answered a minute later when Dylan Binney went high to high on Navy goalkeeper
Pat Ryan (Jr / Groton, Mass.).
Patrick Skalniak (Jr / M / Dallas, Texas) extended his games with a point streak to 25 in a row after burying his shot off an assist by co-captain
Nick Cole (Sr / A / Ashburn, Va.). The Greyhounds once again answered a minute later when Evan James leisurely ran past the Navy defense and targeted his goal to give Loyola a 12-3 lead at the half.
Lindley (Gr / A), the Patriot League's all-time leader in goals scored, again sparked a Loyola run, this time a 5-1 offensive spurt, including the final four of the third quarter, to foil any chance of a Navy rally.
Six different players produced goals for the Mids, including
Max Hewitt (So / M / Denver, Colo.), who recorded his fifth multi-goal game of the year with pair against the Greyhounds.
For a second-consecutive game, Navy struggled at the faceoff "x" where the Greyhounds won 18 of the 28 draws, including 12 of the first 17 in the contest. Bailey Savio (Gr), the Patriot League record holder for both faceoff wins and ground balls, won 15 of the 24 draws he took for Loyola, while Eric Pacheco (Jr) was 2 for 3. With possession the majority of the game, Loyola outshot the Mids 63-36, including 34-13 in the opening half. While Ryan played a solid game between the pipes that featured a career-high 17 saves, he also found himself under siege for most of the game. He faced 58 of the 63 shots taken by the Greyhounds and faced man-down situations six times on the afternoon.
Aidan Olmstead (Gr / A), one of only three players in Loyola history with 100 goals and 100 assists in a career, led the way for Loyola with 7 points on 3 goals and 4 assists, while Evan James (Jr / M) had 5 points on 4 goals and an assist. Linley and Adam Poitras (Jr / M) both finished the contest with 4 points on 3 goals and an assist.
Sam Shafer (Gr / GK) made 9 saves while yielding 6 goals and Luke Staudt (So) and Freeman Whitaker (Sr) accounted for the remaining 4 saves and surrendered goal.
The Midshipmen will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Easton, Pa. to take on Lafayette (4-8, 1-5 Patriot League) at Fisher Stadium. The game is slated for a 12-noon faceoff and will be streamed live on ESPN+. Additionally, WNAV 1430 AM / 99.9 FM will carry the game live with
Joe Miller on the call.
