Men's Heavyweight Rowing

Trio of Mids Invited to USRowing U-23 Selection Camp

Geib set to return to national team, while Duffy and McNicholas are first-time invitees

PRINCETON, N.J. - With the collegiate season drawing to an end in early June, three Navy heavyweight rowers will have the opportunity to continue on the national scene and potential the international circuit as they accepted invitations to the 2022 USRowing Under-23 National Team Selection Camps this summer. Senior Will Geib and junior Billy Duffy will report to the sweep selection camp, while freshman John McNicholas will head to the sculling camp. All three rowers will be competing for the chance to represent the United States at the 2022 World Rowing Under-23 Championships, July 25 through 30 in Varese, Italy.

A member of the 2021 U.S. Under-23 National Team, Geib returns to the program after taking bronze with the men's coxed four (M4+) last July in Racice, Czech Republic. A 2021 IRCA Second Team All-American, Geib has raced with Navy's first varsity eight crew in each of the past two seasons. This spring, Geib has rowed from the three-seat in all seven of the Mids' competition, including last week's Eastern Sprints.

Similar to Geib, Duffy has been a constant presence in Navy's top varsity boat over the 2021 and 2022 seasons. After the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of his freshman season in 2020, Duffy immediately earned a spot in the first varsity boat and competed in all six races in 2021 and six more so far in 2022. Most of his action this spring has been from the two-seat.

The men's sweep camp for Geib and Duffy will be held at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., under the direction of coaches Jesse Foglia, Patrick Lapage, and Justin Jones. The camp will select the men's eight and men's four with coxswain that will race in Varese.

A first-year collegiate rower, McNicholas has impressed the staff both at Navy and at the USRowing offices with his performance on the water and in dry-land workouts. Hailing from Long Island, N.Y., McNicholas has suited up in six competitions this spring with the Mids, four times with the second varsity eight and once each with the first and third crews. He earned notoriety prior to racing at Navy as he twice won gold at the 2019 USRowing National Championship, first in the U-17 men's double event and later in the U-17 men's single competition.

The men's sculling camp will be held at the Conshohocken Rowing Center in Conshohocken, Pa., under the direction of coaches Craig Hoffman, James Konopka, Lyons Bradley, and Aaron Preetam. The camp will select the men's quadruple sculls crew that will compete in Italy. Different from "sweep" which involves athletes to using a single oar, "sculling" requires the athlete to propel their vessel with two oars.

The programs at Hubbard Hall have now had multiple rowers invited to the U-23 Selection Camp in each of the past four years, with heavyweights Griffin Dunne ('22) and Geib, and Alexandria Vallancey-Martinson ('21) from the women's team, most recently competing at the camp and with the national team in 2021. Prior to that, heavyweights Andrew Knoll ('20) and Jacob Klosowski ('20), and Vallancey-Martinson earned the invite in 2020 following Knoll and fellow heavyweight John Lamb ('20) receiving the opportunity in 2019.

The 2022 collegiate season for all three rowers will conclude at the IRA National Championship in West Windsor, New Jersey on June 3 through 5.
