Michael McMorris Invited to Rookie Free Agent Camp by the Washington Commanders

5/4/2022 11:51:00 AM

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Navy cornerback Michael "Mikey" McMorris has been invited to the Washington Commanders rookie free agent camp which will take place May 5-7 in Ashburn, Va.

"I am very thankful for this opportunity and I'm ready to get to work," said McMorris. "I want to thank all the Navy coaches and my teammates who have helped me along the way. I'm going to go and compete as hard as I can and see what happens."

"This is a great accomplishment for Mikey and his family," said Navy head football coach Ken Niumatalolo.  "He is definitely deserving of this opportunity and I'm super excited for him.  He is probably the best cover corner we've ever had at the Naval Academy."

"I am super excited for Mikey, he deserves this opportunity as much as anyone" said defensive coordinator Brian Newberry.  "He is an exceptional player and person. I've been saying he's the best cornerback in the American Athletic Conference for the last three years and I can't wait to see him have success and develop at the next level."

"I am super excited for Mikey, he is so deserving of this opportunity" said Navy cornerbacks coach Robert Green. "He is going to surprise some people at mini-camp. I have seen him line up against the best wide receivers in the American Athletic Conference and Notre Dame, many of whom were drafted or are currently playing in the NFL, so I know that he will show that he belongs on the field. I pray for good health and a clear mind for him."

McMorris was a four-year letter winner for Navy and started 34-career games.  He was invited to play in the 2021 Tropical Bowl All-Star Game and in 2020 was named to Phil Steele's All-American Athletic Conference Fourth Team.

McMorris recorded 155-career tackles, eight tackles for a loss, two sacks, one interception, broke up 21 passes, recovered two fumbles and caused six fumbles.  Five of those six caused fumbles came this year, when he finished fourth in the nation in caused fumbles.

McMorris helped lead Navy to a school-record tying 11 wins, the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy and the Liberty Bowl championship in 2019 and a share of the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy in 2021.

McMorris is the 11th Navy football player in the Ken Niumatalolo era to receive an NFL opportunity.
