KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Navy's
Christian Pumpelly (Sr., Atlanta, Ga.) and
Cy McLeod (So., Augusta, Ga.) each posted 2-1 records in singles and as a doubles team at the Vredevelt Invitational hosted by Western Michigan this weekend in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Pumpelly didn't drop a set in winning his two matches against Reed Gahagan (6-1, 6-1) and Arhaan Pahwa (6-4, 6-2) from Chicago State. His only loss was a 7-5, 6-1 defeat to Butler's Aidan William.
McLeod posted a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-5) win over Butler's Michael Karr and a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Chicago State's Max Sandoval. He too suffered a loss to William (6-0, 7-5).
The tandem also won a 6-0 match against Chicago State's Hugo Hidalgo Vega and Arhaan Pahwa, as well as a 7-6 (7-3) win over the combined team of Gahagan and DePaul's Sven Moser. The pair lost a 6-1 decision to Moser and Cleveland State's Ty Rothchild.
"It was a good weekend of competition for the guys," said Navy associate head coach
John Moreland, who was with the team. "It was a very talented field of players, and it was great competition for us to face early in the fall season. We had some solid results with Cy and Christian both going 2-1 in singles and doubles on the weekend and
Gavin Segraves (Sr., Charlottesvile, Va.) losing a 12-10 third-set tiebreaker today that would have made him 2-1 in singles as well had he won.
"We look to build from this as we prepare for the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic and the Navy Gold Invite in the coming weeks."
