Navy Senior Striker John Marshall Named Semifinalist for the Academic Heisman

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Navy senior striker John Marshall has been named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy by the National Football Foundation.

The Campbell Trophy, which is also known as the Academic Heisman, recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.

The first organization to provide postgraduate scholarships dating back to 1959, the National Football Foundation will select 12-14 finalists who will each receive an $18,000 scholarship as members of the 64th NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments.

Marshall, who carries a 3.39 grade point average while majoring in political science, has been the leader of a defense that ranks fifth nationally against the run (59.0 yards per game). Marshall leads the Mids, and ranks 27th in the country, in tackles with 28 stops in the first three games. He also leads the team in tackles for a loss (3.5) and is second in sacks (2.0).

Marshall is the only Service Academy representative on the list and one of just five from the American Athletic Conference joining Quindell Johnson of Memphis, Tanner Mordecai of SMU, Brad Cecil of USF, Nick Anderson of Tulane and Alex Ward of UCF.

Navy will take on Air Force Saturday in the first leg in the battle for the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy. Kickoff is 10:00 AM (MT), 12 noon (ET) and will be televised nationally. You can also listen to the game on the Navy Radio Network and on SIRIUS Satellite Radio.
